Prerequisites / Co-requisites
All previous Contemporary Dance Practice modules (DAN1011, 1012, 2028, 2029, 3030) and relevant modules in relation to project choice i.e. Dance Facilitation, Digital Arts/Film and Choreography.
This module enables students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of contemporary dance practices in their independent performance project. The module focuses on enhancing their self-reflective skills and understanding of contemporary dance practices and provides students with the opportunity to independently apply and discuss learnt approaches in a professional performance context to develop an advanced contemporary dance practice that incorporates an embodied understanding of somatic principles. Continued participation in classes and workshops supports students’ learning and integration of theory and practice throughout.
• Develop an assured conceptual and embodied understanding of Contemporary dance approaches and movement styles
• Develop an assured understanding of dance and movement principles such as: Alignment, placement, posture, expression, breath and weight, spatial awareness, musicality and a detailed awareness and sensitivity to movement material style and form.
• Develop strategies for the application of principles and approaches learnt within an independently led creative choreographic process to own reflective abilities and development of independent dance practice.
• To develop a knowledgeable and assured understanding of strategies for synthesizing and fusing dance styles from a range of contemporary dance genres.
• Develop consistent effective strategies to engage with feedback, self-reflexive learning and appropriately and understand this in a reflective context.
• Develop an ability to critically reflect on own developing contemporary dance practice and relate this to the wider field of professional practice.
|Demonstrate an assured, embodied and intellectual and performance oriented understanding of Contemporary dance approaches and a range of different movement styles and practices as well as a coherent understanding of alignment, placement, posture, breath and weight, expression, spatial awareness and musicality through the application of key Somatic approaches. Indicative content includes:
A developing sophistication in embodying an understanding of alignment and placement within dance movement.
A developing sophistication towards understanding of stylistic qualities embedded within specific dance genres and artist signatures.
Consistent application of Contemporary dance and somatic principles in relation to alignment, breath, weight and posture and embodiment and perceptual awareness.
Ability to work in a highly developed independent way underpinned by exposure to a range of somatic methodologies.
A detailed awareness and sophisticated sensitivity in relationship to music, rhythmic, phrasing, relationship to space and structural process and performance elements.
Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
allow students to critically reflect on their independent project building on skills learnt throughout the programme (Level 4-6)
The learning and teaching methods include:
Contemporary dance practice classes, somatic sessions, presentation sessions (4 x 1.4hrs pw plus 1 somatic session 11 weeks)
Independent study and group rehearsal sessions.
Engagment with peer feedback through University VLE (Surrey Learn) and class discussion forums
Viewing professional work and engaging with professional forums to inform own embodied, artistic and creative development.
The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate:
An assured knowledgeable embodied and cognitive understanding of principles taught within the practice and demonstrate an ability to reflect on this critically.
An assured physical understanding of Contemporary dance practices and strategies for developing and deepening understanding through reflective practices.
Knowledge through feedback strategies, Continuous participation in workshops, classes and rehearsals and through engagement with reflective discussion forums accessed via the University’s VLE (Surrey Learn).
Evidence application of reflective learning towards student’s own progress and development
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
Continuous assessment (50%): based on participation in class sessions, and demonstration of progress in the development of physical and performance skills. This is evidenced through midway tutorials on progress as well as contribution to VLE discussion forums (contribution to discussion forums can be evidence through provision of statistics in SurreyLearn) (Weeks 1-11)
Performance Presentation (50%): students will receive an individual mark and feedback on their critically reflection critiquing their independent creative performance project.
Week 1-11; 13-14
Formative assessment and feedback
Students receive feedback on their reflective process mid-way through to prepare for their final summative assessment.
