Module overview

This module is taken by Part-time students who are unable to undertake an experimentally based project due to the nature of their employment.  The Independent Study topic is agreed between the student and appropriate member(s) of the academic staff (the Independent Study Supervisor), with the approval of the Programme Director.

Module aims

To provide an opportunity for individual postgraduate taught students to demonstrate their capability to plan and conduct a demanding individual study to a given deadline within the overall context of the programme theme. Also to enable them to demonstrate independent critical thought in the discussion of the topic in the dissertation.

Upon successful completion of the module, students should have demonstrated the ability to work with personal responsibility for a demanding task under limited supervision, using appropriate planning, analytical and qualitative methods, demonstrating some originality in interpreting critically the knowledge they have acquired.  They should also have developed an advanced capability in structuring and writing formal reports which communicate complex information and nuance of meaning effectively in English which is accurate and has clarity and demonstrating ability to make appropriate use of grammar, syntax, vocabulary and style. P
They should be able to respond convincingly to progressive questioning of their methods and conclusions.
Undertake a complex assessment of the literature competently, with minimum guidance, and evaluate the research and data collection methods used by others KC
Communicate complex information and nuance of meaning / ambiguity effectively in English which is accurate and has clarity and demonstrating ability to make appropriate use of grammar, syntax, vocabulary and style. KC

Module content

Indicative content:

Carry out a literature review within the field relevant to the independent study, assessing the relevance of the literature
Synthesise data and evidence to reach coherent conclusion(s)
Structure and write a technical report which presents the context, literature review technical data and findings of the investigation.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy:

Undertake a complex experimentally-based research task at the forefront of the academic discipline competently and with minimum guidance, providing regular updates on recent progress and future plans.  Within the dissertation, provide a structured description of the work undertaken and the conclusions reached which will demonstrate the ability to evaluate the research and data collection methods, showing insight and understanding of relevant literature, making informed judgments about incomplete, uncertain and/or ambiguous findings, and devising predictive models where possible.
