Module overview

The purpose of the module is to enable you to recognise, understand and debate the issues that arise within the cultural and creative industries.  The cultural and creative industries are fast-changing, responsive and innovative environments in which to work.  Critical and creative thinking and the ability to engage with current debates are key skills for sector workers. The module content is co-created by the student group as potential topics for discussion are suggested and agreed upon by all participants at the start of the semester.  Sessions are student-led and highly participatory; each session requires you to undertake preparatory research and reading in order for you to question and debate and to increase your knowledge and understanding.

Module aims

To encourage student-led research, argument and discussion.

To foster critical engagement with contemporary issues.

To create real-world learning environments by the co-creation of topics for discussion and knowledge sharing within the class-room.

Module content

The topics for discussion will be agreed by the group: reference may be made to areas such as changes in government policy, performing right issues, festival management, social inclusion, access to funding, digital piracy, technological developments, for example. The module is intended to be highly collaborative, student-led and discussion-based, replicating real-world knowledge exploration and sharing. Students are expected to conduct preparatory reading so that individual participation and group interaction is informed and lively.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to further students’ understanding of contemporary issues in various aspects of the cultural industries in the UK in preparation for the PTY.

The learning and teaching methods include:


Individual background reading and research.
Student-led group discussions.
Preparation and presentation of an academic poster.
Knowledge-sharing within the class-room.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate and develop subject knowledge, analytical skills, transferrable skills and professional skills

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:


Participation (addresses learning outcomes 3 and 4)
Group-led discussion session - 15 mins (addresses learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6)
A review and critique of two contemporary issues (addresses learning outcomes 1, 2, and 4–9)
