Students must have successfully completed all modules in Semester 1 and 2
Contextual Practice 3 enables students to deepen and extend techniques in practical rehearsal work, whilst developing an example of new writing. The module will engage with the specific disciplines required for developing new writing, and will be delivered via committed ensemble practice.
Rehearsal projects will develop effective rehearsal technique, underpinned by both practice-based and academic research, specific to the development of a piece of new writing. Students will learn how to analyse and interrogate new writing, and to identify, evaluate and process character information according to the specific genre of each piece. They will integrate vocal and physical skills acquired in semesters 1 and 2.
The module also further develops the student’s expertise in the area of research, preparation and contextual discussion. The implications of expression and demands of performance style and genre are discussed and researched.
Students may examine a range of theories developed by a range of performance practitioners. This module and its bibliography will be adapted to reflect the interests of the current cohort and the specifics of the new writing in development.

Indicative content includes:
There will be six weeks of intensive research development and rehearsal with the director or facilitator. This will be followed by one or more performances of the new work during showings week (usually week 7).

9. Assessment of Performance (30%): this addresses 2 and 4 above.
