Module overview

Practice hours, which are a required 50% of the programme. Demonstrating continued development of practical skills, professionalism, holistic care and evidence based practice.

Module aims

The module aims to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate progression in the development of a professional approach to patient assessment and management. Students will build on the knowledge gained in the practice modules in year 1 and will be expected to demonstrate development of an evidence based approach to assessment and management of the patient.

Module content

Indicative content includes:

Students will practice under supervision of heath care professionals or PPE’d, they will consolidate their professional behaviour in the clinical setting.
They will have the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the unwell patient through undertaking thorough investigative patient assessments.
In order to build on their understanding of the multi-disciplinary nature of healthcare, placements in year two will include visits to a Coronary care unit, Minor Injuries Unit, Paediatric A&E and adult A&E, where they will also have the opportunity to follow the patient journey.

30 hours per week in a varied shift pattern of social and unsocial shift times.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate development of clinical skills in a clinical setting assessed by an appropriately educated PPEd and to show the underpinning knowledge

The PPEd will support the student to reflect on and discuss their experiences of a number of emergency and non-emergency patient cases at a mid point review. The students will demonstrate their understanding of the elements required in the provision of clinical decision making. This will link the theories of patient management to clinical pathways  through reflection and research for supportive evidence enhancing the discussions with their PPE’d, who will provide formative feedback.
