The dissertation module develops students’ understanding of the demands and rigours of professional theatre production.
Students will perform in a large-scale production and then write a dissertation reflecting critically on their process.

Prerequisites / Co-requisites
Successful completion of Level 5 BA (Hons) Acting, and successful completion of Advance Practice 1. A good command of spoken and written English. If the student’s first language is not English, and s/he has not been taught in English or studied to A level standard in the UK, s/he will need to demonstrate a minimum level of competence.
Indicative content includes:
Performance of a larger scale production.
A 5000 word dissertation, reflecting critically on the process and performance of the production.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate:
· Performance skills and capacities appropriate to Level 6, including professionalism in conduct in relation to acting as a member of a company
· Cognitive skills necessary for sustained critical reflection upon the students’ own practice
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
· Performance (50%)
· Dissertation: Critical Evaluation of Process/Practice (50%)
The final mark for this element of the module will be assessed via a continuous appraisal of progress and development throughout the process.
Formative assessment and feedback
Formative individual verbal feedback is provided by the tutor after each exercise and summative formal written feedback with a mark at the end of the module. Students are expected to take notes and reflect upon their observations and progress.
Feedback will be returned in accordance with University policy, provisionally by the dates indicated by the Module Leader. It will be returned electronically via SurreyLearn.

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
Develop of the skills learnt in Levels 4 and 5 in full rehearsal and performance situations.
Enable students to deliver a successful performance in a larger scale production.
Enable students to reflect upon their process.
The learning and teaching methods include:
Tutor or visiting professional led sessions.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
