Module Overview

  • This module provides students with the opportunity to develop a comprehensive embodied understanding of contemporary dance practices through continued participation in classes and workshops. Students are given the opportunity apply approaches learnt through working with a dance artist in the previous module as well as their understanding of interrelated movement and Somatic principles towards the development and realisation their own independent performance project.

  • The student is given a choice of settings and contexts within which to develop an independently led performance project. 

  • The module enables students to present their work independently and to devise and manage an independent performance project, applying embodied knowledge of contemporary dance practices within a specific context.

  • The module provides students with opportunities to develop comprehensive understandings of a range of Contemporary dance forms and apply practitioner working processes learnt from the preceding module to an independent, creative and performance context.

All previous Contemporary Dance Practice modules (DAN1011, 1012, 2028, 2029) and relevant modules in relation to project choice i.e. Dance Facilitation, Digital Arts/Film and Choreography.

Module content

Indicative content includes:

The module enables students to apply skills and learning gained working within an artist led creative process to realisation of own independent performance project. The module seeks to enable students to apply professional dance, creative and performance practices as well as protocols and conventions that underpin approaches to making and producing professional dance performance to own independently led project.  Students will apply their cognitive and movement skills and understandings of a developing assured embodied practice through participation in classes, workshops and rehearsals and through reflexive discussion of their own work and the work of others. Students will apply learning gained from working with a professional dance artist and experience of working methods particular to their artistic, stylistic and creative methodologies to their own independent creative performance project.

Indicative content includes:

  • Comprehensive and developing assured understanding of alignment and placement within dance movement and the application of this within an independent creative performance context.

  • Comprehensive and developing assured understanding of stylistic qualities embedded within specific dance genres and artist signatures.

  • Embodied application of Contemporary dance and somatic principles in relation to alignment, breath, weight and posture and embodiment and perceptual awareness.

  • Ability to identify and appropriately apply a range of dynamic qualities within an independently led creative and performance context.

  • Developing sophisticated sensitivity in relationship to music, rhythmic, phrasing, relationship to space and structural process and performance elements.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate:

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive of embodied and cognitive understanding of principles taught within the practice and demonstrate an ability to apply this knowledge within an independently led creative performance process.

  • Demonstrate knowledgeable physical understandings of Contemporary dance practices within an independent performance project context.

  • Demonstrate knowledge through feedback strategies, on-going participation in workshops, classes and rehearsals and through engagement with reflective discussion forums accessed via the University’s VLE.

  • Evidence application of reflective learning within an independent creative process leading to a performance.

Assessment formats and weighting:

  • On-going assessment: comprising participation in class/workshop sessions, and rehearsals, presentation of independent project proposal, evidencing the development of physical, performance skills demonstrated through engagement within an independent performance project.  (Weeks 1-11)

  • Participation in independently-led performance outcome demonstrating an understanding of the relationship of movement principles and stylistic components within Contemporary dance practice. (weeks 13-15)

Formative assessment and feedback

  • Students will present independent project proposal (week 2-4)

  • Feedback will reflect on student progress at a midway point in the module via tutorials.

  • This information can be applied by the student within their preparation for the final summative assessment task.

  • Students will be assessed throughout the module on their participation, contribution to the independent project as well as through contribution to a performance project.

Summative assessment and feedback

  • On-going assessment: Module Convener will provide a summary of progress in consultation with dance tutors and indicate a grade for the student.50% Students will keep a diary of their ongoing process that will be collected in by the module convenor to inform theses discussions.

  • Performance: Students will receive an individual mark and feedback on their work.50%

Module aims

  • To develop students' comprehensive conceptual and embodied understandings of Contemporary dance approaches and movement styles such as; release based technique, Skinner Releasing Technique, Contact Improvisation, Cunningham, progressive dance fusion forms approached from a Contemporary dance perspective, somatic practices such Alexander technique, The Feldenkrais Method, Body Mind Centering.
  • To develop students' physical understanding of dance and movement principles such as: Alignment, placement, posture, expression, breath and weight, spatial awareness, musicality, detailed awareness and sensitivity to movement material and apply these to an independently led performance context.
  • To develop strategies for the application of principles and approaches learnt within a choreographic performance context with a dance artist and apply understandings of the dancer's role in a leadership as well as performance context within an independently lead creative choreographic process.
  • To develop a comprehensive understanding of strategies for synthesizing and fusing dance styles from a range of contemporary dance genres and apply this within a choreographic and performance context within an independently led project.
  • Develop effective strategies to engage with feedback, self-reflexive learning and appropriately apply these toward successful realisation of own independent project.
  • Build on and develop individual skill sets in an independent setting.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching methods include:

  • Contemporary dance practice classes, somatic sessions, presentation sessions (4 x 1.4hrs pw plus 1 somatic session 11 weeks)

  • Independent study and group rehearsal sessions.

  • Engagment with peer feedback through University VLE and class discussion forums

  • Viewing professional work to inform own artistic and creative development.
