Module Overview

To introduce students to the design of reinforced concrete and structural steelwork and the code procedures associated with their design.  Further, the role of the designer in the process of building is explained.  This module is supported by laboratories, one on concrete beams, the second on steelwork.  Further, students are required to undertake coursework on concrete and steel design.

Completion of the progress requirements of FHEQ Level 4 on a Civil Engineering Degree Programme.

Module content

Indicative Content includes


Reinforced Concrete Design


Bending and shear in beams - types of failure, analysis and design
Slabs - one and two-way spanning slabs.
Columns – Non-slender column design using charts.
Reinforcement provision - types and sizes, maximum and minimum areas, cover, bar spacing.





Steelwork design


Beams – restrained and unrestrained beams, local instability, lateral-torsional buckling
Columns – axially-loaded column behaviour, effective lengths, columns in multi-storey buildings
Bolted and welded connections – basic behaviour of individual components and simple connections 
Detailing beams and columns

Alternative assessment for laboratory work: coursework based on the laboratory work.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate an understanding of the design of and connection between basic structural elements.  Further, the laboratory demonstrates visually structural behaviour and reinforces the theory learnt in the class room.

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:

Examination [Learning outcomes assessed 1, 2, 3]  (2 hours, 70%)

Design Reports [Learning outcomes assessed 1, 2, 3, 4, a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, I, j, k, l] (28 hours, 25%).

Laboratory Sessions.  Attendance and participation.  [Learning outcomes assessed 1, 2, 3] (4 hours, 5%)

Formative assessment and feedback

Formative assessment is given during tutorial and some lecture sessions and is based on student progress in the design report.

  • Introduce basic design philosophies and procedures used in the design of reinforced concrete and steel
  • Highlight the responsibility of the designer in the process of constructing buildings
  • Provide students with the ability to design basic concrete and steel elements.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

This module consolidates structural design aspects of reinforced concrete and steel studied during the first two years at University.  Further, the importance of health and safety and sustainability in the design and construction process are discussed.

The module is delivered through lectures, tutorials and laboratories.  The design of a number of elements in concrete and steel forms part of an assessed coursework and tutorial sessions during the year are used to monitor progress and assist students.  Further, laboratories on a steel portal frame and a reinforced concrete beam are undertaken and form part of the assessment. 

The learning and teaching methods include:


Reinforced concrete lectures and tutorials (24 hours)
Structural steelwork lectures and tutorials (24 hours)
Structural steelwork laboratory (2 hours)
Reinforced concrete laboratory 2 Hours)
Design report – presentation and writing (28 hours)
Exam preparation ( 70 hours)



Total student learning time 150 hours.

In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration.
