Module Overview

This module is a supervised independent study undertaken by the student to demonstrate the ability to conduct research at MSc level on a specific topic in biomedical engineering. The student will apply theoretical knowledge and practical techniques gained through the taught modules, as well as additional knowledge and skills acquired independently for the purpose of conducting the research.

Prerequisites / Co-requisites

Normal entry requirements for the Biomedical Engineering MSc degree programme. 120 credits of taught modules are required to qualify for the submission of final report and for the oral defence.

Literature search
Development of the method required to achieve objectives of the project
Experimental, computer simulation, and/or analytical work to yield novel results
Analysis of the results leading to coherent conclusions
Reporting of the literature search and results from the study in written form
Oral presentation of the findings from the project

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate that they have developed competency to formulate, plan and conduct independent research and to
present the results in written and oral form.

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
• Interim report [ Learning outcomes 1,2,3,7] (155 hours) {20%}
• Final report [ Learning outcomes 1, 2,3,4,5,6,7] (440 hours) {55%}
• Oral defence [ Learning outcomes 1,2,6,7 ] (5 hours) {25%}

Formative assessment and feedback

Formative feedback is given during the meetings with academic supervisors.

Formative feedback is given in presentation sessions. The feedback covers aspects such as project planning, technical and theoretical issues, ethics, and presentation skills.

Written feedback is given for all units of assessment.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to conduct independent research with academic supervision. Students will have regular meetings with their academic supervisors (every two weeks in Semester 1 and 2, and weekly over the summer period). Between the issuing of the project, in week 6 of Semester 1, and the submission of final report, there are three presentation sessions in which each student gives a short presentation on the current status of her/his work. This is followed by discussion and formative feedback.

The learning and teaching methods include:

6  hours of independent research per week Semester 1 week 6 through Semester 2 week 15.
40 hours of independent research per week during the summer period.


Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
