Module Overview

Fourth year module for Automotive Engineering MEng students

Building on the fundamental concepts of powertrain design, the system architectures of hybrid and electric powertrains are introduced. The different options for energy storage systems are explained in terms of relevant performance characteristics. Limitations on driving range and the associated range anxiety of customers are discussed and ways to overcome the issues through vehicle efficiency improvements are described, including conceptual/structural changes (e.g., lightweight vehicles, aerodynamics) and technologies such as range extenders and comprehensive vehicle energy management systems.

Methods for the assessment of the energy efficiency of powertrain technologies are described, including backward and forward facing driving cycle simulations and hardware-in-the-loop testing. Vehicle dynamics simulators and real-time systems are explained with several examples.

Indicative content includes:

Design of hybrid and electric powertrains:

  • System architecture and development

  • Energy storage systems: flywheels, batteries, super capacitors and dual mode systems

  • Range extending technologies

  • Vehicle energy management including HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems

Simulation and testing

  • Driving cycle simulations

  • Hardware-in-the-Loop testing

  • Vehicle dynamics simulation and real-time systems

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate understanding of scientific principles, methodologies and mathematics methods as well as the ability to describe particular systems and processes in the final examination. The coursework element allows students to demonstrate that they can interpret a problem, develop simulation models, and present and justify a solution clearly and accurately.

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:

introduce advanced powertrain technology principles through theory with worked examples. This is delivered principally through lectures and tutorial classes and a coursework element involving simulation of a powertrain.

The learning and teaching methods include:

  • 3 hours lecture per week x 11 weeks

  • 1 hour tutorial (in groups) x 11 weeks

  • Coursework (18 hours)

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
