The module includes two aspects. The Research Seminar is intended to give students experience in writing a literature review on a creative/artistic topic, the feedback on which will assist in writing the Dissertation. In addition, it will give an opportunity to learn in detail about a specialised creative or artistic area of film and broadcast production engineering not normally covered in the remainder of the Programme, and to present this to the rest of the year so that fellow students can learn from the findings. The Dissertation is the culmination of the creative/artistic component of the Programme, and will give an opportunity to conduct research in a subject of the student's choosing to a depth not possible during other parts of the Programme.

Prerequisites / Co-requisites
· An initial plenary session in which the purpose of the module will be outlined and advice given on planning and suitable topics.
· An initial tutorial with the module co-ordinator to determine the student's topic and supervisor.
· Tutorials with the student's supervisor.
The content of the Literature Review will be agreed between the student and the module co-ordinator at the plenary sessions held during Semester 1.
The content of the Dissertation will be agreed between the student and the module co-ordinator by the end of Week 8 of Semester 1.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate research skills and advanced understanding of two distinct topic areas.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
· Coursework 1 - Literature Review and Presentation on a subject of the student's choosing. The presentation will be on the topic of the Literature Review and will be delivered to the class. 3000 words due in week 7 of Semester 1 (Literature Review), 20-25 minutes (Presentation), total value 30%.
· Coursework 2 - Dissertation - a dissertation on a different creative/artistic topic from that of the student's Literature Review. 70%, 10,000 words, week 6 of Semester 2.
Practical and summative assessment is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of their chosen specialist subject. Within the Coursework 1 element, the Literature Review will account for a total of 25% of their mark for the module, and the Presentation will account for 5% of their mark for the module.
Formative assessment. There are no formal formative assessment components for this module, but formative feedback will be given to individual students during tutorials. Feedback Students receive written feedback on their Literature Review and verbal feedback from tutors and fellow students on their presentation. Verbal and/or written feedback is also given through tutorial supervision throughout the year.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to foster independent research skills across both semesters.
By separating the content of the literature review and the dissertation, students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in two different topic areas. Students are supported in their independent work through structured guidance in research, academic writing and presentations, as well as one-on-one tutorials. Students will learn from each other's presentations and the subsequent question and answer sessions, delivered during seminars.
The learning and teaching methods include:
· Five two-hour lectures at the beginning of Semester 1 (weeks 1 - 5)
· Eight three-hour seminars in Semester 2 (weeks 1 - 8)
· Tutorial supervision of at least ½ hour per fortnight
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
