This module introduces students to the fundamentals of effective management of academic careers. It adopts a problem-solving orientation which should enable students to acquire a sound understanding of the competencies needed to optimize their chances of publishing high quality research. In addition they will acquire practical knowledge about the research and publication process which will be supplemented with insights from SBS academics with a wealth of experience of the realities of this process.

Resubmit the individual essay.
The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of the module's learning outcomes.
Students will be required to actively participate in class discussions and prepare for these discussions by reading assigned journal articles. They will also complete practical exercises such as providing developmental reviews. These activities will enable students to acquire skills and competencies not only necessary for conducting high quality research but also the summative assessment.
Thus, the summative assessment for this unit consists of:
Assessment 1: Individual essay (3,000-5,000 words)
Students will write and submit a research paper that serves as a dress rehearsal for their confirmation report. Essentially, the paper must define a research problem, review and critique the literature, develop research questions/hypotheses, and propose and justify a method for implementing the proposed research.
Students can expect to receive feedback on their presentations, in-class discussion and activities as well as written feedback on their summative assignments.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to be highly interactive and to provide a collegial environment for experience sharing. A seminar style presentation format will be adopted and students will be expected to read and discuss assigned journal articles. Students will also have an opportunity to practice a number of research-related skills such as manuscript review and preparing a confirmation report.
The learning and teaching methods include:
Verbal student presentations
Student-led reviews of assigned journal articles
Practical activities such as reviewing of manuscripts.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
