The purpose of this module is to train students to develop independent research projects and present the results of their research in a professional academic setting. Some of the projects will be developed in groups, while others will be individual ones. Throughout the term there will be opportunities for students to give informally assessed presentations in order to practice their research and presentation skills before being formally assessed. The research projects will be guided by the instructor in a way that encourages students to develop a range of critical, analytical, theoretical, and historical skills and apply them in a variety of musical, social, cultural, and political contexts.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate:
The ability to present their research in a setting replicating the professional presentation of research at an academic conference, as a member of a group and as an individual. The presentations will be assessed partly on the quality of the research presented, partly on the effectiveness of the presentation, and in the case of group projects partly on the ability to work as part of a team. While students will be encouraged to develop projects of their choice (in negotiation with a team, in the case of the group projects), their range of choices will be guided in a way that specifies the application of the new critical, analytical, theoretical, and/or historical methodologies discussed in the seminars.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
• A presentation with accompanying abstract and bibliography, given during week 8, of the results of an original group research project of 30 minutes.
• A presentation with accompanying abstract and bibliography, given at the end of the term, of the results of an original individual research project of 30 minutes.
Formative assessment and feedback
Students will receive individualised feedback in turn for: An informal group presentation (week 5), a formally assessed group presentation (week 8), an informal individual presentation (week 11), a formally assessed individual presentation (end of term). The feedback will consist of a brief written overview of strengths, weaknesses, and areas of suggested improvement. Group or individual tutorials are also available to discuss performance if requested.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
Further develop the students’ abilities to work as musicological researchers at a professional level. In the process, a range of musicological approaches will be discussed and applied, allowing the students to expand the number of critical, analytical, theoretical, and historical tools they are able to use to conduct musicological research. It is also designed to introduce them to a professional collegial environment, in which research is presented to colleagues and often performed as part of a team.
The learning and teaching methods include:
• Lectures and class discussions on a range of readings (five two-hour sessions over the course of the term).
• Informally assessed group and individual presentations (one of each).
• Formally assessed group and individual presentations (one of each).
• Group or individual tutorials to discuss research topics (to be arranged as needed).
• Group meetings to plan and discuss research and presentations (to be arranged by the students).
• Independent study (approximately three weeks per project).
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
