DEVELOPING PARAMEDIC PRACTICE - 2018/9

The module will commence with an introduction to the therapeutic self in relation to clinical practice within a simulated area. The student will reflect on simulated patient interaction demonstrating their understanding of assessing the patient’s clinical presentation through consolidated theory. This is provided in concurrent modules informing bio-physiological, psycho-social and emotional patient perspectives. Formative feedback from the tutor team and peer student groups will enhance the learning providing building blocks to confidence to enable future patient interaction. The student will then move into the clinical environment under the supervision of practice placement educators. The student will improve their proficiency in communicating, assessing and caring for patients in the emergency and urgent care sector.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate the development of clinical paramedic skills in a simulated environment.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
Patient Assessment OSCE—40%
Clinical Paper (online) 40%
Medicines Management/Pharmacology Exam (online) 20%
Safe Medicate exam—Pass/Fail- 90% threshold
Essential Skills Clusters and Related Competencies —Pass/Fail
Clinical Grading Tool—Pass/Fail
Safe Medicate practice exercises and tutor team feedback will provide formative feedback during each session.
Non-Award Assessment of Safe Practice and knowledge regarding BLS and AED use- inline with learning outcomes. Peer and Tutor Feedback.
- This module aims to enable the students to develop a range of clinical practice experiences intially using a simulation within the context of professional practice. The aim is to preapre students fro the range of clinical placements within the emergency and non emergency health and social settings. Students will gain confidence and competence with patient interactions. This will be supported through completing the patient clinical report documenttion of the acquired assessment data required in year one to prapare them for a range of clinical placements.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to allow students to learn through patient interaction in a variety of settings.
The learning and teaching methods include:
- Role modelling
- Demonstration of patient assessment skills
- Reflective Practice
- Structured feedback
30 hours per week in a varied shift pattern of social/unsocial shift times.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
