The purpose of this module is to introduce the students to the principles of surgical aspects of practice including roles, environmental levels, health & safety and infection control issues that impact on different clinical surgical settings.
This will underpin knowledge and skills for a foundation for clinical surgical practice, these which are transferable to clinical practice and can be built upon in future modules in operating theatre practice.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate that they have met the outcomes of learning for the module. To measure their knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of surgical practice whilst encouraging, guiding and improving the quality of their academic writing.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
Four X 500 word excerpts that examine the fundamental principles that underpin surgical practice.
Each student will examine the evidence for and discuss:
- The acceptable environmental levels in the operating department and their relation to fundamental scientific principles and aspects of theatre design including zoning. (500 words)
- The impact surgical safety check lists (WHO & surgical check-in procedure) have with regards to minimising harm to patients.(500 words)
- Consider the ways you maintain a sterile field including aseptic technique and sterility of self and equipment. Describe the process of sterilisation.(500 words)
- Explain how infection control is implemented in the surgical environment; consider Personal protection Equipment, disposal of waste and Control of Substances Hazard to Health. (500 words)
This assignment will be evenly weighted across all three Undergraduate Grade Descriptors Categories, and will be looking to see if the student has met the criteria to meet the learning outcomes as numbered below:
- The student has demonstrated a sound knowledge and understanding of environmental levels within the operating theatre. (LO 2, 4).
- The student has discussed theories that affect checking the patient in for surgery, infection control relating to the surgical procedure and analysed how these theories impact on surgical productivity and the environment, (LO 1, 2, 3, 4).
- The student should support their work using relevant literature from a wide range of academic sources and disciplines to support their excerpts, (LO1, 2, 3).
Please note that if a student recommends unsafe practice; the assignment will be awarded a fail grade.
Students will independently look at the four areas and provide a detailed plan to be discussed within a facilitated peer-group formative feedback meeting held by their personal tutor.
Students will receive feedback on their plan during the module via verbal feedback within small facilitated tutorials, this feedback will inform the final summative assessment.
- The aim of this module is to enable the student to understand the operating department practitioners’ role in the circulating and scrubbed phase and focuses on a range of practical skills including reception of patients, surgical equipment and environmental considerations. In addition, the student will be encouraged to explore a variety of approaches to the provision of skilled assistance in different clinical surgical settings through a range of surgical specialities.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
Optimise the student learning experience by delivering current evidence based practice informed by current practice and one that employs up-to-date learning tools and technologies. Using a flipped classroom blended learning approach that allows the students to direct their own learning with face to face and facilitated sessions and simulation to support and reinforce core content.
The learning and teaching methods include:
- Blended Learning (Directed E-learning activities and Padlet)
- Group Critique
- On-line discussions
- Simulation 4 x 3hrs
- Self directed learning opportunities
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
