Module content

The academic content of the module concentrates on integrating theoretical and practical knowledge in order to enable the student to study the subject area.

The content will include:

 

Decision making theory, Pattern recognition, Information processing, Illness script theory, Diagnostic and narrative reasoning, Development of expertise, Critical thinking, Intrinsic and extrinsic factors, Policy development, Risk assessment tool, Legal and ethical issues, Hazardous avoidance, Human and system factors.

An analysis of a decision related to patient safety, identifying and exploring the key theories of decision making, judgement and risk management.


2500 words (100% of the module marks)

A plan identifying the problem and the key aspects relating to the proposed solution.

Module aims

  • The aim of this module is to enhance practitioners' understanding and knowledge decision making, judgement and risk within healthcare.  Additionally the module will build on existing knowledge to link theories to practice in order to improve patient safety.

Learning outcomes

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The module has 9 taught study days delivered by using a variety of learning and teaching strategies.

Subject knowledge will be delivered through key note lectures, group tutorials, work-based learning and guided self-directed study.

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
