Students must be eligible to return to parts one or two of the NMC Register.   Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to study at level 6. All students must have evidence that they were previously on the NMC Register and the date that their registration lapsed. This information is required to identify individual student need based on the Department of Health guidance (2011) shown below: Years out of practice Minimum practice hours required Equivalent days in practice(7.5 hours per day) 5 – 10 450 20 11 – 15 450 40 https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/215451/dh_133001.pdf Criteria for application: Previously qualified nurses only must meet one or more of the following criteria. A) The applicant’s training was consolidated for a minimum of 6 months immediately after qualification and their Personal Identification Number (PIN) has lapsed for no more than to the end of the 5th year B) The applicant’s PIN lapsed more than 5 years ago, they must have evidence of undertaking a minimum of 150 hours of Health Care or Social Care work experience within last 6 months. C) The applicant’s PIN has been lapsed for more than 10 years but no more than to the end of the 15th year, applicants will be required to meet the above criteria (B), plus references will also be required from their current or previous employer. D) The applicant’s training was not consolidated for a minimum of 6 months following qualification, the module must be completed within five years of initial registration. An up to date CV will be required and references will be requested from their current or previous employer. Each applicant who meets the criteria A, B, C or D will be required to pass a selection interview, which will be conducted jointly by a member of the academic team and the practice placement partner. For midwives, registration will not have lapsed for more than 10 years and the applicant’s training was consolidated for 6 months following qualification. However each applicant will be judged individually at a joint interview between the RTP midwifery lead and practice partner. Nurses and midwives, for whom English is not a first language, returning to practice must provide evidence of passing an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.0. prior to being accepted on the module. Additionally, applicants must have evidence of obtaining a practice placement in which to undertake clinical experiences. The placement must have a current educational audit, a named mentor and a ‘sign off’ mentor. This is a PSRB requirement.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate achievement of the learning outcomes and competence in practice

 

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:

Successful completion of a professional portfolio which demonstrates the achievement of the outcomes identified by the Nursing and Midwifery council (NMC). This will be assessed in practice by a sign-off mentor and will be pass/ fail. Students must achieve a pass in order to pass the module.

 

Students will also be required to complete a reflective account which demonstrates how they have achieved each of the learning outcomes and offers an evaluation of their own professional development and critically reviews their  practice experience (2,500 words)

 

Formative assessment

Students will receive on-going formative feedback from their mentor in practice. Students will be able to submit a plan of their written assignment for formative assessment by their tutor. Academic tutors from their field of practice also provide ongoing support.

Module aims

  • The aim of the module is to offer learners the opportunity to update and extend knowledge in professional, clinical and theoretical aspects of clinical practice for nurses and midwives wishing to return to practice. It reflects the current NMC requirements for those wishing to re-register and return to practice following a break. The module enables the student to enhance their knowledge and understanding of practice and re-visit skills in order to regain confidence and competence as a registrant.
  • Explore the policy context of health and social care and the influences on practice
  • Develop skills in utilising evidence to underpin practice
  • Investigate and develop skills of communication and reflection
