This module introduces students to contemporary devising practices to prepare them to create devised performance in response to particular stimuli and devising methods. In particular, the module will enable students to understand plural approaches to devised performance and develop a practice ‘toolkit’ from which the the second Laboratory module will draw to create a public performance. The module will introduce specific techniques, which may be adapted from the work of specific practitioners and/or developed for the module. Students will be encouraged to see devising as a rich field of practices and to locate their own emerging practice within this field. Classes may include workshops, self-directed tasks, presentations on practices, reading/attendance at performance/viewing to support the teaching of practices and concerns in contemporary devising practice. Students will be able to actively experience and reflect on modes of devised performance in a relatively secure ‘laboratory’ before going on to make public performance in the second Laboratory module.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate
knowledge of devising strategies

skills of reflecting on individual contribution and keeping learning open for the second Laboratory module.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
A ‘project pitch’ that evidences clear and reflective engagement with the module as well as individuals’ contributions to and learning from it, to be submitted towards the end of the module (2000 words equivalent; work may include presentation material, performance demonstrations, written documentation)
Formative assessment and feedback
Students will work on an outline (300 word equivalent) of their individual devising strategies relating these to the practical workshops and other contemporary devising practices to be discussed with module tutors for feedback in preparation for the 'project pitch'.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
Prepare students to locate themselves as practitioners within an existing field of contemporary theatre and performance practice. The module will introduce students to devising methods, drawing on professional practices where relevant. In so doing, it will provide a staged process of inviting students to construct their own practice. This will be led by staff in the second year and open to student-led practice in the final year, specifically in devised work and the dissertation.
The learning and teaching methods include:
11x studio practice sessions (including, for example: workshops, seminar and roundtable discussions, small-group tutorials, performance viewings)
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
