Educational aims of the programme
- The taught postgraduate Degree Programmes of the Department are intended both to assist with professional career development within the relevant industry and, for a small number of students, to serve as a precursor to academic research. Our philosophy is to integrate the acquisition of core engineering and scientific knowledge with the development of key practical skills (where relevant).
- Attract well-qualified entrants, with a background in Electronic Engineering, Physical Sciences, Mathematics, Computing & Communications, from the UK, Europe and overseas.
- Provide participants with advanced knowledge, practical skills and understanding applicable to the MSc degree.
- Develop participants' understanding of the underlying science, engineering, and technology, and enhance their ability to relate this to industrial practice.
- Develop participants' critical and analytical powers so that they can effectively plan and execute individual research/design/development projects.
- Provide a high level of flexibility in programme pattern and exit point.
- Provide students with an extensive choice of taught modules, in subjects for which the Department has an international and UK research reputation.

- The programme in Satellite Communication Engineering aims to provide a broad background in satellite communications and satellite engineering and a pathway either into research or in manufacturing industry or service provision. Basic courses in satellite communications and spacecraft engineering are augmented by state of the art courses in detailed components of the discipline enabling the student to chart their own delivery of specialisation. Practising engineers are involved in parts of the courses, and projects can be done in industry. Alternatively students can work with our research teams to define the future systems. Strong links to industry mean that our students have a perfect introduction to employment and are to be found in all of the major industries and operators. In addition many stay with us to complete a research degree.

This Master's Degree programme is studied full-time over two academic years, consisting of 240 credits at FHEQ level 7*. All modules are semester based and worth 15 credits with the exception of project, practice based and dissertation modules.
Possible exit awards include:

Part-time students must study at least two taught technical modules per academic year, until a total of eight is reached. These eight taught technical modules must include all the compulsory taught technical modules. Arrangements for carrying out the project are flexible, and may be adapted to the circumstances of the student, subject to the rule that the student must have satisfactorily completed the taught portion of his or her programme (including the Engineering Professional Studies (EPS) modules), before being allowed to submit his/her final project report for assessment. The EPS modules are partly linked to project activities, and the related assignments need to be carried out whilst the project is in progress.
