This module is the second part of the Surrey Business School business skills development program, which embeds employability. The content of the Business Decision Making module has far-reaching implications for the student’s development of professionalism and expertise in academic and professional life.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate the acquisition of the knowledge, skills and behaviours outlined in the learning objectives. This is achieved by a mixture of formative and summative assessments.
90-minute test using MS Excel (60 mins) and a Multiple-choice test (30mins) (50%)
2000-word report (50%)
90-minute test which will assess competence of using MS Excel as well as forensic business decision making. The forensic evaluation of business decision making will be achieved using case studies. The development of competence in quantitative analysis will be achieved with a mixture of using practical sessions, a workbook and MS Excel. Feedback will be facilitated by
2,000 word written report on a selected area of business will assess the student’s ability to write an effective, informative professional document for decision making. This will require the student to:
understand, analyse and interpret basic statistical data
think critically and conduct analysis
utilise business information to make decisions more effectively
utilise MS Word & Excel effectively
In addition, students will obtain additional support during a residential writing workshop and through their contributions to online discussions etc to evaluate their competence and creativity in the use of ICT and the application of qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Students receive marks out of 100 for both assessments, along with feedback on their individual performance.
Formative assessment and feedback
Students work regularly as individuals and in groups to complete various activities to develop their understanding of business decision making over the course of the module.
Students are provided with the assessment criteria and weighting for each component of the exam and written report when the assessments are introduced early in the semester.

- Focuses specifically on the key requirements for business decision making including but not limited to critical thinking, problem solving, report writing and the analysis of business information using quantitative and qualitative methods.

Face to face and online lectures/webinars to facilitate discussion about key areas of learning.
The use of a work book to facilitate development of quantitative analytical skills.
Application of quantitative and qualitative methods of analysis for business decision making.
Online discussion groups to empower students to communicate their creative thinking and make an impact through collaboration.

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
