This module considers the decisions of consumers and businesses and an interaction of these decisions in markets. It plays an important part in understanding firm behaviour and particularly in understanding of the ways in which businesses operate. Businesses do not exist in isolation. They must operate within a complex and sometimes turbulent environment. The key forces facing businesses are economic, political, legal, technological, demographic, social-cultural, ethical as well as ecological. This module examines the economic architecture of both the business environment and businesses themselves. It introduces students to the roles of business in society and discusses current and potential business contribution to sustainable development and ideas concerning corporate responsibility to environment and society.

An individual A3 sized poster (with a separate page of 500 words maximum narration) which suggests options for a real business problem and its sustainability environment. The poster with the narration is to be uploaded to SurreyLearn at the date and time to be announced (at the end of the module).
The assessment strategy of the module allows students to demonstrate two things. First a clear understanding of theory in the context of both businesses and the environment in which they operate. Second how that theory can be applied to real world problems in order to reach conclusions which are robust and defendable.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
A1: A 1 hr mid-term on-line multiple choice Economics test to verify understanding of basic economics principles in the business environment.
A2: A group poster (A3) which suggests options for a real business problem and its sustainability environment. The poster is to be uploaded on SurreyLearn with a 10mins group presentation at the date and time to be announced (at the end of the module).

Formative assessment and feedback
During the residential, students will have the opportunity to evaluate issues within the business environment, to discuss and share their thinking on the issues identified. In engaging, students will be able to develop their ideas and gain valuable feedback to further their knowledge and understanding in completing assessment.
Students are provided with the assessment criteria and weighting for each component of the presentation and written report when the assessments are introduced early in the semester.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The teaching and learning strategy is designed to give students the opportunity to gain knowledge and understanding of the relevant theories to a range of topics in the study of Business Economics. The teaching and learning methods are based around the delivery of lectures, webinars and workshops. Lectures are mainly designed to illustrate and explain theoretical concepts and models and the workshops to illuminate the theoretical concepts and models by reference to and explanation of a range of specific issues. The lecture precedes the workshop and, prior to attending, students are required to undertake the essential reading of the theory and relevant material assigned in the relevant lecture which precedes any workshop. The module culminates in a Sustainability Poster where students will present through posters their ideas for a real business problem delivered to them in the preceding weeks.

Formal lectures/workshops each for both Business Economics and Sustainability elements. These will be supported with webinars.
On-line discussions on SurreyLearn.
Enquiry Based Learning
The teaching and learning strategy is designed to encourage students to engage in discussion workshops. They are responsible for their own learning by combining lecture presentations, webinars and self-directed learning based around the core text and supporting material on SurreyLearn and applying this in their workplace.
Strategy for Independent Learning
Students will learn best through active engagement and independent learning. This is reflected in all elements of the module design, including:
Before each lecture, relevant lecture notes will be provided on SurreyLearn, along with some suggested reading. Students are expected to read before attending the lecture.
Students are expected to attend and participate in all lectures/workshops, discussion Board (SurreyLearn) and webinars.
Workshops are designed to apply theory learned from the lecture in critical, real-life situations. Students are expected to participate in the discussions and come prepared.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
