Module Overview
Projects provide an efficient and effective means of delivering corporate strategy for both public and private sector organisations. Fundamental to this is robust project sponsorship and management. This module is focused at FHEQ Level 6 students that wish to develop, plan, manage and control projects successfully in a business environment. This requires an awareness of general project management principles, methodologies and the tools and techniques as applied within multi-disciplined projects. Within this module students will receive a robust grounding in the theory and practice of project management delivered by lectures and by using project management software (MS Project) in a computer laboratory setting

In cases when it is not possible to re-assessthe group assignment, then an individual alternative assessment will be applied which is aligned with the objectives of the module. (70%)
Assessment Strategy
The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate the ability to apply project management theory, tools and techniques in a real world situation through undertaking a group project and writing a group project proposal covering LOs 1 – 5 above.
The summative assessment for this module consists of a written group project proposal submitted in Week 11 designed to gauge the group’s understanding of the key concepts of project scope generation, project planning, implementing, monitoring, evaluating, risk assessment and project costing using the tools and techniques discussed in the module in a real world project context. This covers all 5 LOs identified above.
Specific project management understanding will be evaluated by a final two hour multiple choice examination. This covers LO1, LO2 and LO3.
Formative assessment and feedback
Formative feedback will be given before the written group proposal is due to be submitted. In addition students will be given formative feedback in lectures aimed at helping them to prepare for the examination.
Module aims
- This module is intended to provide students with a clear understanding of project management tools and why they are used to deliver both small and large-scale projects within both public and private sector organisations. Students will be able to learn the key aspects of project management from a business management perspective; understand the relationship between the project sponsor and project management team and critically evaluate the soft as well as the hard components necessary to manage a project successfully. This will include being able to understand how to evaluate a business case for investment, analyse the appropriate procurement and funding options for a project, develop and motivate a team, apply tools and techniques for planning projects, evaluate a plan using critical path analysis, learn how to monitor and control projects and understand how projects should be run successfully

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to encourage a deep approach to learning with an emphasis on collaborative learning through the use of working teams and the real situation of project planning. This links to the programme learning and teaching strategy.
The learning and teaching methods include team decision making and team written presentation skills. The teaching and learning format is designed to emphasis a methodology for project management and to give students the opportunity to gain experience through the integration of theory and practice. The teaching and learning process will be facilitated by weekly lectures including two computer laboratory sessions where students will be given the opportunity to use Microsoft Project software. In addition online support for team project discussions will be provided through SurreyLearn. Lectures will involve the explanation of theoretical concepts of project management and the online portion will support this by allowing students to test and apply their understanding of the concepts to a group project.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
