An individual 3000 word assignment discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the project management process as exemplified in the group project drawing on the literature as appropriate.
The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate a robust knowledge and understanding of project management theories and concepts and their appropriate use to underpin arguments and decisions (K/C). Demonstrate Professional, Practical and Transferable Skills through researching a plan and manage a small to medium sized project to its successful conclusion (T/P). Demonstrate critical thinking and awareness of cross management issues and their impact on the success of a project and the ability to apply skills learnt from across the MSc programme (C/T)
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of a 7000 word group assignment which supports the strategy outlined above.
The alternative assessment for this module is an individual assignment of 3000 words discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the project management process as exemplified in the group project drawing on the literature as appropriate. This assignment covers the module learning outcomes in a different way from the group assignment and can therefore be achieved in less words.
Formative assessment and feedback through laboratory time which will be used to assist students in determining their knowledge of the project planning concepts and will also aid the tutor in focusing on areas requiring further support (P/T). On-line YouTube videos will be available to support the students in assessing their own understanding through the use of Q&A links (K/P). Case studies will also be used to aid the development of knowledge and critical awareness and provide further formative assessment (K/C/T). Verbal feedback in tutorials and case study reviews (following work conducted as part of guided learning) will be used to assess development of knowledge and understanding (K). The feedback will be used to inform the lectures in area that students require further support before the final summative assessment.
- The primary aims of this MSc module are to help students acquire a good understanding of project management and to develop the ability to plan and manage a small to medium sized project to its successful conclusion. To develop students' collaborative and team working skills, they are encouraged to work in groups throughout the semester. On completion of the module, participants should be able to apply project management knowledge and skills to day-to-day operational and ad hoc projects.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to provide a range of delivery methods in a blended way to facilitate the development of project management skills. The first half of the module concentrates on the theories underpinning the subject, including cognition of cross disciplinary impact on project outcome. The second half takes an active learning approach. Structured seminar and lecture sessions allow students to work in teams on their selected projects. Team work is critical to the success of implementing and delivering success through project management.
The learning and teaching methods include the use of two-hour lectures (2x 11 hours)to illustrate the theory, supported by one-hour seminars/tutorials (1 x 8 hours), which will demonstrate the practical application of such theory. Laboratory sessions (3x 1hours) will run to teach and support students in using MS Office project. Lecture notes will be posted through SurreyLearn a week prior to the lecture. Lectures will be designed to build upon the pre-reading from the course text and support the development of the assignment. Lectures will be supported by videos and group discussions.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
