Hotel managers need to be able to measure and analyse the financial, social and environmental performance of the business in order to underpin decisions in a hotel management and investment setting. In this module participants will learn how to critically evaluate financial information and data available in annual reports, financial analysts’ reports and other relevant sources. Using the principles and practices of analysis offered in this module managers will be able to continuously optimise their hotel performance and enhance the profitability of the investment decisions.

Indicative content includes:
Measuring and reporting financial position and performance of the organization in the hotel industry.
Measuring and reporting cash flows of organizations in the hotel industry.
Analysis and interpretation of financial statements of the organization in the hotel industry.
Cost volume profit analysis and full costing in the hotel industry
Budgets and budgeting in the hotel industry.
Capital investment decisions in the hotel industry.
Managing working capital in the hotel industry.
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) simulations.

The assessments are designed to capture learning in all the topics. The online exam, consists of multiple choice questions, and it will assess participants on the theoretical knowledge covered in the lectures (Module Content 1 to 7).
A reflection exercise on the ERP simulation will ask the participants to reflect the key decisions and actions they made in the two rounds’ simulations and state the consequences. The exercise aims the participants to summarise the experience they could use to real business decision makings in the future (Learning outcomes 4 to 8).
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
One-hour online exam (20 multiple choice questions) worth 30% of overall module mark.
Reflection of the ERP simulation worth 70% of overall module mark.
The online exam is scheduled in Week 12 and the due date of the reflection is in Week 14.
Formative assessment and feedback
The feedback of the online exam will be given automatically and immediately after the exam, whereas the feedback of the reflection will be available no more than three weeks after the submission date. The formative dimension in this module will be handled by feedback in seminars.

The learning and teaching strategy is developed in this module to facilitate active learning and to support participants in achieving the learning outcomes.
Twelve two-hour lectures incorporating class-room participation to illustrate the theories
Twelve one-hour tutorials to practice the practical application of the theories covered in the lectures
Utilizing SurreyLearn as the main pool of resources including lecture handouts, tutorial problems, and discussions.
ERP sandbox simulation as a platform for participants to apply the knowledge learnt in this module into “real” investment and business decision makings.

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
