The purpose of this module is to introduce you to the field of contemporary musicology. It will do this in two ways: by means of the presentation of overviews of distinct areas of musicology; by analysis of common and distinguishing approaches and philosophies.

Indicative content includes:
- Determining fields of contemporary musicology (Historical Musicology; Popular Musicology; Structural Analysis; Postmodern Musicology; Performance Analysis; Screen Musicology, etc).
- 2. Competing approaches to musicological knowledge (Epistemologies and Ontologies: Textuality; Contextuality; Positivity; Provisionality; Performativity, etc.).
- 3. The relevance of interdisciplinary perspectives within musicology (Psychology of Music; Sociology of Music; History of Music; Semiotics & Literary Theories; Psychoanalytic & Feminist Theories, etc.)

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, awareness, and understanding of key issues in recent musicological debates.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
- 2000-word essay
- 2000-word essay
Essay plans and bibliographies
Detailed written feedback will be provided within three weeks of the submission of both the formative and summative assessment.
Verbal feedback will be given to contributions during class discussions as well as individual tutorials on coursework essay plans.

Individual essay tutorials
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
