The purpose of this module is twofold: to teach you to critique particular musicological essays within your purview; to enable you to apply relevant techniques, combined with the knowledge gained from Readings in Musicology 1, to a particular question of your devising.

- Critiquing musicological writings (using the CAFÉ model – Content & discourse; Authority & rhetoric; Form & logic; Evidence & assumptions).
- Structuring an extended essay.
- Putting into practice your critique

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate demonstrate their knowledge, awareness, and understanding of key issues in recent musicological debates.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
- 4000-word essay
Essay plan and bibliography
Detailed written feedback will be provided within three weeks of the submission of both the formative and summative assessment.
Verbal feedback will be given to contributions during class discussions as well as individual tutorials on coursework essay plans.

- To develop in you the ability to communicate clearly in writing your analysis of a particular question in contemporary musicology.

The learning and teaching methods include:
Class-based discussions and presentations
Individual essay tutorials
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
