Module Overview

The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the fundamental practical and creative skills needed to interpret and realise scenography: prop-making, scenic painting and scenic construction.

This module reflects the programme’s aim to produce practitioners with specialist knowledge - here specifically in the field of design realisation. This module will serve as a general introduction to design realisation skills for students whose area of professional interest may lie elsewhere and as an introduction to professional practice for students who intend to make a career in scenic painting, prop-making or scenic construction.

Module content

Indicative content includes:


Practical prop-making techniques including the use and application of poly-carving, wood, upholstery and latex.
An introduction to practical scenic construction techniques including: Health and Safety in the workshop; the use of hand and power tools and bench machinery; introductory construction skills in timber and welding.
Fundamental skills in scenic painting including: Health and Safety in the paint-shop; the colour wheel; brushes, materials and implements; preparing the substrate; an introduction to a range of painting techniques.
All areas – an introduction to the art of interpreting design and technical drawings and/or scale model pieces and effective modes of communication between maker, scenographer and other members of the production team.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate practical knowledge on the core realisation skills aligned with the study of scenography. It also offers students the opportunity to demonstrate their independent research and wider knowledge of scenic realisation techniques.

Formative Assessment (which is designed to help structure your learning)

Students will receive feedback on their performance via one-to-one tutorial during practical taught sessions, or at times when the student is engaged in independent work, progressing their samples or small scenic elements.

Summative Assessment (for which you receive a formal ‘grade’ at the end of the module)

Assessment : Exhibition

Due: Week 12 as part of a group exhibition (exact date / location TBC)

This presentation amounts to the objects that each student makes as part of their participation within the 4 workshops, which are costume, scenic construction, scenic painting, and props. There is no requirement for a supporting physical or virtual ‘document’. Your contextual knowledge is assessed as part of the Skills Realisation exhibition. Students will present their 4 objects as part of an exhibition scheduled in Week 12. The practical execution of the work will be assessed at this point. The ‘grade’ for the Practical Portfolio will be composed 4 elements reflecting the submitted objects. The overall aim of the task is to engage with distinct methods of ‘making’ aligned with the study of scenography. The work will be assessed against the published assessment criteria.

Module aims

  • Introduce students to a range of practical skills for the interpretation and realisation of scenic art, prop and set elements
  • Place the art of design interpretation at the centre of realising prop and set elements for performance, with a view to
    creating makers who are invested in a creative, active process of realisation
  • Signal the importance of problem-solving as a significant part of the process of design realisation
  • Encourage a high level of communication between the maker and the scenographer or other production roles invested in
    the realisation of prop and scenic elements
  • Communicate a framework for the realisation process which includes a period of relevant research and the costing of
    materials
  • Convey methods for the costing of materials for scenic painting, scenic construction and prop-making

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to give students the maximum amount of practical experience within the 11 week period. It allows for both the dissemination of information and also for time to apply those skills to the development of small experimental pieces or samples. This is to ensure all students receive a solid foundation in making skills that will support their ongoing development into professional practice.

The learning and teaching methods include:


Taught practical sessions either in studio or class environment
Attendance at workshops, seminars, master-classes
Practical exercises
Group presentation
Individual tutorial/viva voce


This module attempts to facilitate key areas of the Programme learning and teaching strategy specifically those defining demonstration and review within workshops, rehearsals, productions, practical classes, laboratory/studio-based practice, screenings, lectures, seminars, tutorials and tutor and learner-directed practical projects evidencing core, elementary theory and practice. Resource-based learning, including library work and attendance at performances is a key feature of the Learning and Teaching strategy for this module.

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
