Alternative Assessment

As this module involves Continuous Assessment, it is not feasible to run an identical resit of this aspect during the Summer vacation. In view of this, if you fail the Electronics coursework you will be asked to complete an additional experiment during the Summer vacation and write a lab report, which will be assessed.

This module is intended to advance your understanding of acoustics, circuit theory and analogue electronics, using a combination of theory and application.

Module aims

To advance your understanding of theoretical and practical aspects of acoustics and psychoacoustics

To introduce the fundamentals of electronic devices and amplifiers

To introduce important skills such as component level troubleshooting

Module content

Indicative content includes:

human auditory perception;
acoustic measurement and specification;
acoustic standards in music;
introduction to semiconductors;
the bipolar junction transistor;
bias circuits, small signal amplifier operation, and power amplifiers;
operational amplifiers (op-amps) and op-amp circuits;
frequency response, stability and compensation;
basic audio circuit design;
circuit diagrams and schematic reading;
component-level and system-level fault finding; -
electronic circuit construction, familiarisation with electronic components;
the use of electronics test and measurement equipment and procedures.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to: develop your skills and knowledge in acoustics, analogue electronics and circuit analysis, allowing modules in later semesters to build on this knowledge.

The learning and teaching methods include:

Two two-hour lectures or seminars per week
Five three-hour laboratory sessions

Practical classroom demonstrations
Guided reading
Coursework assignments and feedback

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate and develop subject knowledge and understanding (exam, coursework).

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:

Coursework 1 (Acoustics) - class presentation on assigned research topic (addresses learning outcomes 4-7 & 16-17);
Coursework 2 (Electronics) - one written assignment, one lab report, and continuous assessment during labs (addresses learning outcomes 8-14 & 17-19); and
Exam - written paper under exam conditions (addresses learning outcomes 1-11).

Formative assessment

There are no formal formative assessment components for this module, but formative feedback will be given to you in tutorials as required, throughout the laboratory sessions, and in the form of regular revision questions in lectures.


Verbal feedback will be provided in laboratory experiments. Written feedback will be given on the coursework assignments.
