Educational aims of the programme

  • The aim of the Certificate is to equip students with core counselling skills and IPC intervention skills to enhance their effectiveness with clients in distress, develop in a brief IPT based intervention (IPC) and increase their understanding of mental health issues without undertaking a full therapy qualification. This PGCert will however provide a foundation to enable students to progress onto the PGDiploma in Interpersonal Psychotherapy. The PGCert provides training for individuals with no previous therapy qualification to progress onto the PGDip and become a fully qualified IPT therapist. At present no other IPT course in the UK offers this opportunity as training in IPT has traditionally been restricted to those already qualified in another psychological therapy.

Programme structure


This programme is studied part-time over 12 months, consisting of 60 credits at FHEQ level 7. All modules are worth 15 credits with the exception of project, practice based and dissertation modules.
