PREPARING FOR PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE - 2020/1

This module aims at sensitising students towards notions of profession, professionalism, leadership and application of subject specific as well as transferable skills in a professional setting. Students are encouraged to reflect on the meanings and practices of these notions in preparation for the upcoming professional training year. They will also learn how to research a professional environment and reflect on the research process by incorporating feedback from peers and others.

- The historical development of the concept of profession and of professions
- The role of contexts on professional definitions and practices
- Professional knowledge, values, attitudes and behaviours
- Professional practice and reflection on and in practice
- Leadership and its meanings for different professional contexts

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate achievement of the module learning outcomes.
The written work assesses subject specific knowledge and ability to discuss and debate relevant issues such as the changing nature of higher education in relation to the employability/work readiness agenda and its relationship with the industry.
The presentation assesses a set of practical, professional and transferable skills such as team work, presentation skills and communication. In addition, students are assessed on their ability to reflect and apply theory to professional practice.
Students are provided with ongoing feedback from the module convenor during the seminar discussions and mock presentations as well as individual feedback on both formal assessments.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The overall teaching methodology for this module is student centred, interactive and enquiry-based to help students to articulate their own thinking, conceptions and pre-conceptions about the notions listed under ‘Content’ and compare these, in basic ways, with canonical theories about these notions. Typically, students are asked to prepare through online tasks that are then discussed in class for knowledge sharing and expansion. Work will take place in small discussion and task groups under the tutors’ careful guidance. Occasional short lecturers may be used for introductory or summative purposes. Readings and small research tasks will be part of the preparation for class work or follow it. Students will be also prompted to think carefully about the changes in knowledge sets and skills acquired during the module.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
