Learners successfully completing this module will have developed critical thinking skills that enables them to comprehend and synthesise complex ideas. Learners will be able to develop nuanced responses to existing theories and methodologies of data collection and analysis. Learners will have developed a high level of self-awareness to analyse and take accountability for their actions and behaviours at work. Completion of this module will help learners identify their area of research interest and provide them with the ability to develop research questions or hypothesis to be tested in the context of their own organisation.

All participants must meet the entry criteria for the Programme. Completion of pre-course introductory workshops on SurreyLearn.
Learners will identify a topic of interest and a real issue within their organisation that they wish to address and indicative content includes (Apprentice Learning Outcomes):
- Introduction to research methodologies (PSC1)
- Developing critical thinking skills in terms of critical reasoning, writing and reading (PSA2)
- Methods of data collection (PSB1)
- Analysing qualitative and quantitative data (PSB1)
- Ethical issues in research (PSA2)
- Developing a framework for reflective practice (PDE1)
- Critiquing your own practice (PDE1)
- Applying reflective practice to formulate long term career goals and development plans (PDE1)

The assessment strategy is designed to provide learners with the opportunity to demonstrate the ability to analyse complex, incomplete or contradictory data to present findings in a clear and compelling manner. In addition learners will need to develop a comprehensive framework for reflecting on their own practice to identify areas for improvement and to take accountability for actions.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of two parts:
Research Proposal: 90%
Learners will be required to identify an area for further applied research throughout their Master’s programme. Learners will be required to define, and agree with their organisation, a key live strategic or operational issue that is having a negative effect on organisational performance. Learners will be required to define a research question and carry out initial data gathering and analysis to define the scope and scale of the problem. The research proposal will be 2,000 words.
Individual learning journal / e-portfolio – 10% of marks
Learners will be required to reflect on the application of this learning in the workplace. Using reflection and other analytical skills the learners will be required to produce a critical reflection of their learning through the production of a 1,000 word reflection log.
Learners will be required to participate in weekly activities on SurreyLearn. Suitable exercises and other assignments will be deployed for learners to complete to demonstrate the acquisition of the relevant competence and confidence in different statistical methodologies.
The tutors will provide feedback on all learners’ activities to ensure that learners’ knowledge is being developed at an appropriate rate to prepare them for the summative assessment at the end of the module as well as to help prepare them for their final work based project. Learners will also receive written feedback on their final submission within the University’s three week deadline.
- This module aims to provide learners with a detailed understanding of the research process and to distinguish between different research methodologies and processes. The module will enable learners to undertake independent research to identify and analyse issues in the workplace. The module will also foster a sense of personal responsibility and accountability through the development of a mindset of reflective practice.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy has three distinctive elements:
1) Lectures and workshops on campus and online to reinforce key study skills and provide learners with the opportunity to apply their learning and to receive formative feedback on the application of their learning
2) Independent learning with guidance from the module leader and industry subject matter expert. This approach reinforces the learner’s responsibility for developing both critical thinking skills and reflective practice. It also enables the learner to identify research topics that are of interest to them and of relevance to their organisation
3) Online guided activities utilising the full multi-media learning capability of SurreyLearn to enable the learner to access materials in different ways and to give them the opportunity to collaborate with other learners to share, discuss and evaluate
The learning and teaching methods include:
Lectures and workshops to introduce learners to key concepts, frameworks and techniques. The lectures and workshops will be supplemented by practical guided activities to build learner’s competence and confidence in dealing with different research methodologies. Learners will be expected to deepen their knowledge and understanding by undertaking a number of indpendent learning activities including preparatory and supplementary reading. Learners will be required to participate in online discussion forums to share their understanding of the application of different research techniques.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
