Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate

  1. The ability to critically assess research methods and findings

  2. The ability to formulate their own research designs to address research questions relevant to the lecture topics

  3. Knowledge of experimental work in cognitive, developmental and social psychology

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:

  • A 1,600 word summary and critical review of an experimental psychology paper (assessing learning outcomes 1, & 3)

  • A 1.5 hr essay based exam (assessing learning outcomes 1, 2, & 3)

Formative assessment

Students will complete a 1,600 word summary and critical review of an experimental psychology paper of their own choosing.


Students will receive written feedback on their 1,600 word summary and critical review.

  • Introduce students to a variety of approaches to experiments in psychology
  • Discuss the design of experiments and how to analyse them

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:

  • Help you develop knowledge in the area of experimental approaches in psychology.

  • Help you learn to evaluate experimental work

  • Help you to use your knowledge of experimental approaches to design your own studies

The learning and teaching methods include:

  • Lectures (11 weeks, 2 hours each week)

  • In-class discussion and learning exercises

  • Lab visit

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
