The aim of the module is to introduce theory and methods that can be applied to improve the design of technology, work and the workplace. The modules is built around two assignments. In the first, students are given a simple work environment or product and use ergonomic methods to gather and analyse data to inform recommendations. This is presented as a group. In the second assignment, students select a work environment or product themselves and conduct a more thorough ergonomic analysis, drawing draw upon relevant theory and evidence to inform recommendations presented as a usability report.

The summative assessment for this module consists of:
1. Group presentation
This assignment has been designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn methods relevant to ergonomics and human factors.

2. Usability report (2500 words excluding figures, tables and reference section).
This assignment has been designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and application of theory and methods relevant to ergonomics and human factors and their skill in developing recommendations based on their diagnosis.

Formative assessment and feedback
Formative assessment will also be provided through the group exercises which involve analysis and generating recommendations in different aspects of work design.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
- enable students to develop as scientist-practitioners. That is, to apply psychological theory, evidence and methods to solve organisational problems.
The learning and teaching methods include:
- 2 hour seminar x 11 weeks. This will involve a combination of lecturing and group exercises.
- 128 hours independent study. This will involve a combination of reading, and data collection and analysis for the assignments.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
