Module Overview

This module introduces skills, practices and competencies in a range of areas of theatre production and enables students to explore and demonstrate these in a number of contexts. It will focus primarily on basic technical competencies and requirements (which may include lighting, sound, audio visual, props and health and safety). The module will prepare students to work in University spaces, to work safely with technical equipment and to be aware of the work that is required in planning for and implementing production processes. More broadly, the module will provide students with a critical awareness of technical aspects of performance in terms of how they work, why they are important and what impact they have on public performances.

An Introduction to:

  • Health and Safety

  • Lighting rigging, focusing and operation

  • Sound rigging and operation

  • Stage management

  • Analysis of scripts for production needs/ground plan, props

  • Pre-production/Rehearsal scheduling

  • Elements, stages and responsibilities of a production process

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate


  • Practical and critical knowledge of production techniques (one or more may be offered)

  • Critical awareness of the impact of production processes on public performances

  • Understanding of how to apply production techniques to practical problems

  • Performance analysis skills (especially as they relate to Production processes)


Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:

  • UoA1: Practical Presentation (e.g. fashion show demonstrating practical compentencies gained in module) – 70%, group mark

  • UoA 2: Reflective Technical Report (performance observation, reflecting on technical aspects of the work in relation to own learning) – 30%, individual mark


Formative assessment


For UoA 1, all students will be set practical tasks in class time and receive feedback on that work (indicatively, Term 2, weeks 2 – 4 and 9)


For UoA 2, in small groups, students will be asked to present critical reflections on technical performance observations (indicatively, Term 2, weeks 5 & 10)



Formative assessments will receive oral feedback

Summative assessments will receive full, written feedback

Module aims

  • Provide an experience of theatre and performance production techniques (one or more may be offered).
  • Allow students the opportunity to reflect on production practices.
  • Educate students in the technical and performance principles of one or more technique(s) with the ability to demonstrate this understanding through practical application and reflective writing.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:

Introduce students to production activity in classroom and studio environments, enabling reflective and practical learning on the application of skills to live performance scenarios and more theoretically. The focus of the module is on practical and applicable skills development, and on embedding the transferable skills involved within production. It is these skills that are being reflected on in UoA2. The blend of practical examination (UoA1) and critical reflection (UoA2) will enable students to think through practical problems and recpgnise the impact of that practice in production contexts. Thus students will learn to engaging in critical thinking, problem solving and self-development which can then be applied across their study within theatre and beyond.


This module introduces the ideas of practice as a method of understanding theatre and becomes the introduction to using production as a way of interrogating theatre (both in theory, design and in practice)

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
