Module purpose: This module provides students studying Medical Imaging at postgraduate level with an overview of quality assurance and research methods appropriate for clinical use. It also provides students with a practical introduction to the application and handling of Ionising Radiation.

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of the following.
- Formal laboratory report
- Research proposal, written in accordance with NHS requirements
- Oral presentation on medical imaging topic from prescribed list
- Report on National Healthcare provision in a country of choice
Formative assessment and feedback
For the module, students will receive formative assessment/feedback in the following ways.
- During supervised laboratory sessions, as needed
- During and after oral presentation
- Via written feedback provided on all submitted written coursework
- This module is aimed at familiarising students with the QA requirements used in the NHS and with the skills needed to undertake clinically-based research. It is also aimed at developing broader communication skills in terms of report writing and oral presentation methods.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to achieve the specified learning outcomes by means of supervised study, research and development. These activities are guided by a full-time academic via lectures, workshops, guided study and supervised laboratory experience. They are designed to provide an opportunity for the student to have the experience of applying, to particular task-oriented assignments, the knowledge acquired during the medical imaging programme. In carrying out each assignment, the student has to critically evaluate relevant literature, marshal ideas for research or lab evaluation, and produce a reliable and coherent report.
Learning and teaching methods include the following.
- Training sessions (5h).
- Supervised study and research, guided by a full-time academic or experienced research worker, and involving:
- Individual supervision meetings (20h)
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
