Module Overview

This module extends from the design modules in the first year. The basic CAE skills generated in year 1 were primarily CAD and in this module these skills are extended to include FEA (finite element stress analysis). This provides a computer based stress analysis alternative to the analytical stress analysis skills developed in other parts of this programme. Project Management skills will prepare students for a group design activity enabling them to specify, plan and monitor their progress. The design, make, evaluate (DME) project provides an opportunity for the students to work on a group based project and apply the engineering knowledge they have learnt to the design and manufacture of a customer specified product/system.

Applications of computer based stress analysis in design (FEA)- 5 credits

An introduction to finite element analysis and the software package ANSYS; line area and solid elements, integration of CAD into the design process. Single parts and assemblies, modelling fibre-reinforced composite materials and a mini FEA modelling project.

Project Management 5 credits

Project definition: what constitutes a project, the project lifecycle and requirements capture. Project management: UK/international standards, work breakdown structure, resources and costs, Gantt charts, risk management, monitor and control.

DME Preliminary design - 5 credits

Working as a group, students will be assigned a project relating to their programme. Overseen by academic supervisors, the groups will develop a specification for the DME exercise, undertake a concept evaluation, produce a plan for the detailed design/build phase of the project in semester 2, and produce a preliminary design review (PDR) report.


DME exercise- 15 credits

Continuing from Semester 1 the groups will produce manufacturing drawings and a production plan, carry out a full manufacturing and testing risk assessment, manufacture their product and then test it against key criteria including the original specification and environmental impact. Groups will also produce a final report, a poster and display exhibit for assessment.

Alternative Assessment

An alternative to the final DME assessment, which normally includes group presentation and workshop manufacturing, may be set which will comprise an individual design project.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the 3 key complementary elements of this module: FEA, Project Management & DME.

FEA is computer based and a written assignment based on the FE analysis of a product is the most natural assessment method.

Project Management (PM) is assessed initially in a  written assignment which involves planning of a project to prepare students for the DME activity.

DME comprises a major group activity running over 2 semesters and draws on the FEA and PM elements while introducing CAD, manufacture skills, materials selection and evaluation of a product they have made. This is largely assessed in 2 written reports in which individual contributions are identified but includes oral assessment, poster and oral presentations.

Formative assessment and feedback

Formative feedback is given in tutorials, supervised group meetings and to individual group members following the DME preliminary design reveiw submission

Formative assessment of the DME specification and CAD work is given in written and verbal form at the supervised group meetings.

Module aims

  • develop further the understanding of the design process
  • show the place of finite element stress analysis in this process
  • provide an understanding of the complete engineering product development process from requirements capture through to end-of-life decommissioning/disposal, by means of  participation in a group design project involving design, manufacture and evaluation of a prototype product.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:

Introduce FEA and project management through lectures, computer laboratory classes and tutorials. Design, Make & Evaluate is undertaken as a group activity with weekly supervised meetings monitoring progress leading to CAD, purchase of materials and components followed by manufacture in the workshop and subsequent product development and testing

The learning and teaching methods include:

Semester 1

FEA :                                       14 hrs (2hrs/wk for weeks 1-7 per group, 2 groups)

Project Management :               14 hrs (2hrs/wk for weeks 1-7)

DME :                                      16 hrs (4hrs/wk for weeks 8-11)

Semester 2

DME :             60hrs contact (5hrs/wk for weeks 1-12)

W1-3 :             5hrs/wk computer lab tutorial

W4-12 :           1 hr/wk computer lab tutorial + 4hrs/wk workshop (32hrs w/s)

W15 :              Exhibition + Oral examinations
