In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, and in a departure from previous academic years and previously published information, the University has had to change the delivery (and in some cases the content) of its programmes, together with certain University services and facilities for the academic year 2020/21.

The module includes two aspects. The Literature Review and Presentation is intended to give students experience in writing a literature review on a technical topic, the feedback on which will assist in writing the Technical Project. In addition, it will give an opportunity to learn in detail about a specialised area of engineering research not normally covered in the remainder of the programme, and to present this to the rest of the year so that fellow students can learn from the findings. The Technical Project is the culmination of the technical component of the programme, and will give an opportunity to conduct research and study in a subject of the student's choosing to a depth not possible during other parts of the programme.

Prerequisites / Co-requisites
The content of the Literature Review will be agreed between the student and the module co-ordinator at the plenary sessions held during Semester 1.
The content of the Technical Project will be agreed between the student and the module co-ordinator by the end of Week 8 of Semester 1.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate research skills in the form of a literature review, and technical writing and presentation skills in the form of a detailed technical project.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
- Coursework 1 - Literature Review and Presentation on a subject of the student's choosing. The presentation will be on the topic of the Literature Review and will be delivered to the class. 3000 words due in Semester 1 (Literature Review), 20-25 minutes (Presentation), total value 30%.
- Coursework 2 - Technical project. A research-based technical paper on a different topic from that of the student's Literature Review. 70%, 10,000 words, Semester 2.
Practical and summative assessment are designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of their chosen specialist subject. Within the coursework element, the Literature Review will account for a total of 25% of their mark for the module, and the Presentation will account for 5% of their mark for the module.
There are no formal formative assessment components for this module, but formative feedback will be given to individual students in tutorials during seminar sessions.
Students receive written feedback on their Literature Review and verbal feedback from tutors and fellow students on their presentation. Verbal and/or written feedback is also given through tutorial supervision throughout the year.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to foster independent technical and research skills across both semesters. By separating the content of the literature review and the technical project, students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in two different topic areas. Studentsare supported in their independent work through structured guidance in research, technical writing and presentations, as well as one-on-one tutorials. Students will learn from each other's presentations and the subsequent question and answer sessions, delivered during seminars.
The learning and teaching methods include: · Five two-hour lectures at the beginning of Semester 1 (weeks 1 - 5) · Two days of presentation seminars in week 11 · Tutorial supervision of at least ½ hour per fortnight on coursework assignments and feedback
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
