CRITICAL REVIEW OF SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE - 2022/3

In light of the Covid-19 pandemic the University has revised its courses to incorporate the ‘Hybrid Learning Experience’ in a departure from previous academic years and previously published information. The University has changed the delivery (and in some cases the content) of its programmes. We have updated key module information regarding the pattern of assessment and overall student workload to inform student module choices. We are currently working on bringing remaining published information up to date to reflect current practice in time for the start of the academic year 2021/22.

Two of the intended learning outcomes for this programme are to appraise scientific literature and to communicate ideas, principles and research. In order to achieve these outcomes this module deals with approaches used to select and cite appropriate information from the scientific literature. The quality and accuracy of scientific reporting in press publications will be explored.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate :
- Ability to appraise scientific literature within the field of Medical Microbiology
- Citation of references using a standard format
- Ability to communicate ideas, principles and research through the production of a literature review
- Appreciation of the importance of accurate and high quality communication of science
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
- An “Evaluating the Literature” exercise to be completed via SurreyLearn. Deadline: the third week of the module
- A 3000 to 4000-word literature review on a relevant topic. Deadline: the last week of the module
Formative assessment and feedback
Students will be able to complete a practice SurreyLearn exercise, and also meet with their personal tutor on a one-to-one basis to discuss progress with the literature review. Students will be able to gauge their progress during the seminars and workshops.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
Develop a critical understanding of the scientific literature through facilitated self-directed learning. The skills gained on this module are directly transferable to all other modules on the programme, and to the wider science profession.
The learning and teaching methods include:
- Six hours of seminars, workshops and class discussion
- Two hours of one-to-one tutorials
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
