Module Overview

Module four focuses on the issues of the spread and control of diseases transmitted by various routes such as air, direct contact and ingestion, using specific examples. Here the student will be exposed to the complex issues of trans-boundary diseases, the differing biological properties of the disease agents that enable transmission and the obstacles these present to their control and/or eradication.

Module content

Content to be covered:

Different pathogen transmission routes and the relationship of transmission pathways and control methods

Specific pathogen transmission pathways representing viral, bacterial and parasitic pathogens transmitted by aerosol, contact, faecal-oral or food-borne route, biting and wounds

Control measurements implement for different  pathogens and adaptation of control measures according to transmission pathways

Understanding the problems and possibilities of potential pathogen eradication

Emerging of new viruses

Response to global pathogen outbreak threats

An individual presentation may be used as an alternative to a group presentation

Assessment Strategy

Coursework     comprising:

(i) A “Rapid Reports”, in which each student will present a 5 min overview of a specific subtheme using no more than five p.p.t. slides (20%) All Rapid Report together set the theme for a final short Report to be written Students can use each other’s presentation to aid in composing the written component of the Rapid Report. (1000 words – 20%) 

(ii)  Scientific Essay (2000 words) on specific topic (60%). 


Students will receive verbal feedback during each lecture – this is achieved by the Lecturers asking questions and assessing student responses and input into discussions. The lecturer will then highlight areas of confusion or provide clarity where necessary. Individual one-to-one discussions are also possible with this small group of students.


Module aims

  • To provide a detailed overview of the biology of veterinary micro-organisms that are transmitted by routes such as air, direct contact and ingestion and to understand the concepts of disease transmission and control. 
  • To provide a detailed overview of the methods employed to interrogate the biology of vectored veterinary micro-organisms with specific reference to clinical observation of disease, surveillance, diagnostics, control measures and policies for control.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The module content will be delivered by a mix of lecture presentations, discussion groups, in-class group work, tutorials and coursework assignments.

In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration.
