In light of the Covid-19 pandemic the University has revised its courses to incorporate the ‘Hybrid Learning Experience’ in a departure from previous academic years and previously published information. The University has changed the delivery (and in some cases the content) of its programmes. In this module, the students will be introduced to the most important gastro-intestinal diseases of animals (viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic), making a special reference to those with a zoonotic potential. The students will also be introduced to the HACCP legislation and will have the opportunity to to gain an extra qualification (FDQ level 3).

· Anamtomy and physiology of the digestitve tract of animals (comparative)
· Salmonella and E. coli infections
· Brachyspira and Lawsonia
· The normal microbial gut flora (metagenomics). Diet and health status changes
· Veterinary probiotics: an alternative to antibiotics.
· Overview of common intestinal parasites
· Calicivirus (Norovirus)
· Ratovirus and Coronavirus

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate:
· Content knowledge of gastrointestinal diseases of animals
· Writing ability and use of terminology
· Presentation skills
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
· Oral presentation (20%)
· Essay (rapid report) (20%)
· In course test MCQs (HACCP) (20%)
· Written essay question exam at the end of semester (40%)
Students will receive verbal feedback during each lecture – this is achieved by the Lecturers asking questions and assessing student responses and input into discussions. The lecturer will then highlight areas of confusion or provide clarity where necessary. Individual one-to-one discussions are also possible with this small group of students.
- To provide an in-depth understanding of infectious diseases of the gastro-intestinal tract of animals.
- To provide an in-depth understanding of the mechanisms of pathogenesis unique to the gastro-intestinal tract, pubic health and food safety, and special reference to control measures.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
· Provide gastro-intestinal diseases (infectious) in the context of One Health
· Allow students to develop skills identifying GI tract structures and sample collection
· Provide students with a sound background on HACCP principles and legislation
The learning and teaching methods include:
· Lectures, practical (post-mortem examination and sample collection), small group sessions and presentations and role plays in groups.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
