Module Overview

You will be required to attend rehearsals and concerts as agreed with the Head of Performance, and will be expected to play a full part in the musical life of the Department. 

In addition to your assessed performance you will be required to perform a significant solo or small ensemble item in a major Department concert (eg Wednesday lunchtime concert) on an unassessed basis. 

The assessment will take place in a public concert.

A high level of instrumental/vocal skill and experience in performance as demonstrated in audition.

Module content

Indicative content includes:


  • Individual practice, participation in rehearsals and concerts (both as a solo and ensemble player)

  • Reflection on and study of issues relating to performance

Alternative Assessment

15-minute recital replaced with written essay of 2500 words.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate the development of technical, interpretative and performance skills towards a professional standard and to enable them to undertake informed reflection on aspects of performance.  

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:


  • A 15-minute solo recital on their main instrument given in public

  • A 1000 word account (reflective or critical in nature) on a topic arising from their performance activity during the semester

  • Evening concerts with Departmental ensembles and student ensembles

  • From instrumental tutors

  • Detailed written feedback is given after the formative assessment detailing strengths and areas for improvement.


Module aims

  • To enable you to develop you skills as a performer, technically and musically.
  • To develop your self-confidence and assurance in presenting musical performances in front of an audience.
  • To develop skills in the learning of unfamiliar repertoire, and you will be strongly encouraged to develop your repertoire interests beyond the conventional.

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
