Educational aims of the programme

  • To extend experiential knowledge and critical understanding of vocal practice
  • To deepen the understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of vocal practice
  • To develop an integrated approach to the teaching and coaching of voice and singing
  • To impart an advanced understanding of vocal pedagogy and practice that informs the development of future practice within the field
  • The programme aims to produce versatile students equipped to enter into the professional world of voice and singing teaching, building sustainable and rewarding careers. The MFA allows students to deepen and extend their learning over a sustained 2-year programme, offering the opportunity for further development of skills in voice and singing pedagogies, greater opportunity for observation and shadowing of professional practice, and the opportunity to gain a qualification (MFA) which has international recognition

Programme structure

Full-time

This Master's Degree programme is studied full-time over two academic years, consisting of 240 credits at FHEQ level 7*. All modules are semester based and worth 15 credits with the exception of project, practice based and dissertation modules.
Possible exit awards include:
- Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits)
- Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits)
*some programmes may contain up to 30 credits at FHEQ level 6.

Other information

The structure and design of the programme enables all students to intensify and strengthen their understanding of key concepts, specialised skills in the teaching and coaching methodologies of voice and singing. The high-quality international graduates' benefit from a practical and critical philosophy and understandings of pedagogical delivery, design and preparation for effective employability across a variety of teaching and learning contexts, embedding enviable transferable skills in singing and voice teaching in an international context. The programme employs inclusive approaches through, drawing upon a range of cultural perspectives and practices. Students engage crucially with socio-political contexts and questions surrounding voice and singing training. Independent research, group tutorials and online practices support the learning via the VLE. Students are encouraged to consider the environmental and social impact vocal coaching and teaching impacts on their research through the development of their personal teaching practices. An ethos of self-reflection permeates the design of this programme, encouraging inquisitive, self-aware and resilient cohorts, keen to understand the implication of opinions and key concepts and methodologies support the vocal profession. Fostering progressive transferable skills, cultivating highly employable graduates.
