Module Overview

This module is designed to provide students with an understanding of enterprise at the individual, firm and societal levels of inquiry.  The module will enable students to understand theories of entrepreneurship, innovation, opportunity recognition, entrepreneurial process and business venture creation, relating these to practice. They will also simulate the behaviours of an entrepreneur through producing a fully researched business plan for a new business venture. The purpose is to enable students to be aware of the role enterprise formation plays in the economy.

Module content

The content will comprise of the following: 

  • Introduction to the entrepreneurial process and role of entrepreneurship in new business venture creation;

  • Introduction to the opportunity recognition space and entrepreneurial market opportunity analysis;

  • Introduction to the role of innovation in new business venture creation.

  • The business planning process and new business venture creation:

    • Entrepreneurial products and service development  

    • Entrepreneurial pricing, distribution, and promotion

    • Customer and competitor analysis, team and operational plan   

    • Entrepreneurial financial planning

Alternative Assessment

Individual report to assess the same learning outcomes as the group report. 

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their learning and meeting of the modules’ learning outcomes in terms of the key skills of critical discussion, debate, problem-solving and decision making. 

The assessment strategy is summative and formative and aligns with the learning outcomes. More specifically, assessment 1 facilitates students’ learning for outcome 1, 2, and 5 whereas assessment 2 is particularly suitable for learning outcome 3 and 4. There is also an element of peer assessment where students discuss and weigh the contribution, they have made to the group project.

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:

  • An individual Video Presentation

  • A fully researched group business plan for a new venture  

Formative assessment and feedback

Students will receive formative feedback in the form of verbal feedback in seminars and during office hours.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:

Develop students’ awareness of entrepreneurship and enterprise both as a field of theoretical study and as an area of practice.
The learning and teaching methods are:

Designed to enhance understanding of theories/tools and models to new business venture creation, including creative techniques and strategies to develop solutions to real-life problems problems.

The Learning Outcomes are met through:

    • Lectures, seminars, class discussions and debates 

    • Case studies, guest lectures, and practical examples (to comprise part of the above contact teaching sessions) 

    • Multimedia resources e.g. audio podcasts (used both in class and as part of guided study/class preparation)

    • SurreyLearn VLE (used to support learning and teaching and communication with students)

    • Support materials

    • Reading and class preparation via directed learning and independent study

    • Individual work

    • Group discussions and debates 

In addition the module teaching team are accessible throughout the semester to address and clarify questions.  Office hours will be provided. Feedback given will be oral and written on an individual basis and summative.

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
