Module Overview

The Integrative Applied Project (IAP) is a 30 credit capstone project, requiring students to demonstrate their ability to integrate the knowledge and skills acquired during the entire programme to practice in a holistic way. Students choose one of the three options below:


  • Business Plan – Students may want to start their own business and this project can be the first step on that journey. The business plan will have to be detailed and actionable and will be judged on how compelling a case it makes for viability and / or investment.

  • Consultancy Project – Students may prefer to work on a live business problem with a real company.  The consultancy outcomes must be actionable by the client and will be judged on the added value that the customer receives from the project. The client can be corporate, public or third sector;

  • Management Research Project – Students may choose to focus on a wider practical or theoretical issue in a specific industry, investigating the research problem via the examination and application of theoretical frameworks and concepts.

Methods of Teaching / Learning





The learning and teaching strategy for the Integrative Applied Project is designed to encourage students to think critically and independently about their role as providers of solutions or enablers of opportunities for stakeholders in the corporate, public or third sectors.. The University’s virtual learning environment (SurreyLearn) will be used to support student learning by providing them with, alongside teaching materials, formative materials and additional resources and links to useful websites. The teaching and learning strategy for the project component is designed to allow the students to take responsibility for their own learning and progress, supported by individual supervision during which students will be able to explain, discuss and refine their particular ideas (including organisation specific research problems) with their supervisor through regular supervision.

The Integrative Applied Project is not a taught module, but rather a supervised independent capstone project.  Learning and teaching methods include:

1.    Compulsory 2 day IAP Sprint sessions designed to prepare students for the research element as well as introduce students to the three IAP options.

2.    One-on-one supervision





 

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.

Other information

Sustainability: The Integrative Applied Project provides students will multiple opportunities to explore and apply Sustainability learning, knowledge and principles.  The Business Plan option for example is very popular with students looking to develop an idea for a business focused on create social and / or environmental value. The Consultancy option affords students the opportunity to work with a real organization working towards sustainability programmes and objectives.

Global and Cultural Intelligence: Students use the IAP as a vehicle for examining issues and challenges across the world.

Digital Capabilities:  Two of the three IAP options encourage students to develop their digital capabilities.  The Business Plan option is frequently the basis for a new digital platform based business, whilst the Consultancy option can be used by students looking to address a challenge for an existing digital business.

Employability:  The IAP integrated knowledge from across the spectrum of management education, and as such helps to enhance employability.  Choices made by students during the process can also signal expertise in particular areas of interest for employers.

Resourcefulness and Resilience: The IAP is an independent project, and by it’s nature encourages resourcefulness and develops resilience.
