This module allows students to specialise in an aspect of the programme which is of particular interest to them by writing a dissertation based on thorough research on a specific TESOL issue.  Successful completion of the module requires close collaboration with a supervisor and good planning and organisation skills.

Indicative content includes:


  • research on a well-specified question related to TESOL drawing on relevant literature;

  • the integration of empirical work, case studies and theory from the area of TESOL

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate


  • the ability to compose a 12,000-14,000 word dissertation (excluding abstract, references and appendices)

  • insight into, reflection on and critical engagement with concepts related to TESOL which are of particular interest or relevance

  • the ability to work independently on an extended piece of work in a sustained way with guidance

  • research skills developed to a level of complexity and sophistication commensurate with masters level descriptors

  • the ability to plan and manage larger projects over a period of time to meet deadlines and quality expectations



Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:


  • a 12,000 – 14,000 word dissertation (excluding abstract, references and appendices.)



Formative assessment

Students will submit a proposal, a timeline and a draft literature review and will receive formative feedback on them.

Additional feedback will be provided through meetings and/or communications with the supervisor.  

Module aims

  • Allow students to work on a topic independently in depth, with appropriate guidance
  • Provide the opportunity for students to specialise in an aspect of the taught programme which is of particular interest
  • Synthesise the skills and knowledge which students have acquired during the academic year.

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:


  • Enable students to formulate appropriate research questions

  • Facilitate the selection of appropriate investigative tools to conduct research into an area of enquiry within the field of TESOL

  • Enable students to carry out a research project of significant complexity, analyse the results and present the findings in a  12,000-14,000 word dissertation



The learning and teaching methods include:


  • communication with programme leader to discuss possible topics

  • individual consultation and discussion with the programme leader and/or individual supervisors

  • independent research

  • regular meetings to discuss progress 


Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
