RESEARCH PROJECT - 2019/0

Module code: ENGM209

Module Overview

This module is a supervised independent study undertaken by the student to demonstrate the ability to conduct research at MSc level on a specific topic in biomedical engineering. The student will apply theoretical knowledge and practical techniques gained through the taught modules, as well as additional knowledge and skills acquired independently for the purpose of conducting the research.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate that they have developed competency to formulate, plan and conduct independent research and to
present the results in written and oral form.

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
• Interim report [ Learning outcomes 1,2,3,7] (155 hours) {20%}
• Final report [ Learning outcomes 1, 2,3,4,5,6,7] (440 hours) {55%}
• Oral defence [ Learning outcomes 1,2,6,7 ] (5 hours) {25%}

Formative assessment and feedback

  • Formative feedback is given during the meetings with academic supervisors.

  • Formative feedback is given in presentation sessions. The feedback covers aspects such as project planning, technical and theoretical issues, ethics, and presentation skills.

  • Written feedback is given for all units of assessment.

Module aims

  • Independently plan and conduct original research on a previously unexplored topic
  • Further advance their knowledge and develop additional analytical and practical skills
  • Communicate their findings through oral presentations
  • Document their work in the form of a substantial dissertation of scientific standard.

Learning outcomes

Attributes Developed
1 Perform a literature search to establish the background and critically evaluate the current body of work relevant to the topic of the project KC
2 Identify, from the literature search, the unresolved issues in the topic of research in which to make an original contribution. C
3 Define specific research objectives, formulate appropriate methods for achieving the objectives, and plan their completion within the necessary timeframe. CT
4 Develop, independently, additional analytical and practical skills necessary for the completion of research tasks. These can involve the use of advanced engineering software, use of laboratory equipment, and/or acquiring additional theoretical knowledge, depending on the nature of the project. CP
5 Collect or generate data through experiment, computer modelling, or other means. P
6 Analyse, interpret, and evaluate the data to formulate conclusions. C
7 Present findings of the study in written and oral form.     T

Attributes Developed

C - Cognitive/analytical

K - Subject knowledge

T - Transferable skills

P - Professional/Practical skills

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to conduct independent research with academic supervision. Students will have regular meetings with their academic supervisors (every two weeks in Semester 1 and 2, and weekly over the summer period). Between the issuing of the project, in week 6 of Semester 1, and the submission of final report, there are three presentation sessions in which each student gives a short presentation on the current status of her/his work. This is followed by discussion and formative feedback.

The learning and teaching methods include:

  • 6  hours of independent research per week Semester 1 week 6 through Semester 2 week 15.

  • 40 hours of independent research per week during the summer period.

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
