Module Overview

This module supports your development of personal and professional attitudes and abilities appropriate to professional employment. It supports and facilitates self-reflection and transfer of learning from your Professional Training placement experiences to your final year of study and your future employment. The module is concerned with Personal and Professional Development towards holistic academic and non-academic learning, and is a process that involves self-reflection, documented via the creation of a personal record, planning and monitoring progress towards the achievement of personal objectives. Development and learning may occur before and during the placement, and this is reflected in the assessment model as a progressive process. However, the graded assessment takes place primarily towards the end of the placement. Additionally, the module aims to enable you to evidence and evaluate your placement experiences and transfer that learning to other situations through written and presentation skills.

Module content

The module focuses on achieving the learning outcomes by offering, via the Placement and associated activities, the opportunity for you to nurture the employability skills that graduate employers look for and to develop the professional identity, competencies and attributes that support future employability.

Indicative content includes:

• placement scheme overview;


• writing a CV and cover letter;


• interview techniques;


• experiences of employees and placement students;


• starting employment;


• Health & Safety at work and risk assessments; and


• workplace activities as determined by your employer.

Alternative Assessment

The alternative assessment below is for the Professional Development Review (PDR): Taking account of the four competencies outlined in the Professional Development Review, provide a critical analysis of your own experiences on a work placement against these key benchmark competencies. 25%

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your achievement of the learning outcomes and the acquisition of the employability skills and competencies that support your graduate employability.

The summative assessment for this module consists of:

• CV and Cover Letter (LO1, LO2, LO4, LO6, LO8) to be submitted at two stages: (i) before commencing placement (2nd year semester 1), for review and feedback; and (ii) upon completion of the placement year, appropriately updated for review and grading.


• PDR (LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5, LO6, LO7) to be started prior to the placement (2nd year semester 2) and completed, with input from the Visting PT Tutor and workplace supervisors over the duration of the placement period.


• Placement Report (LO2, LO4, LO5, LO6, LO7, LO8) to be submitted at the end of the placement year, and to include a subject-specific or technical section (2,000 words) and a section containing reflection on your personal and professional development (2,000 words);


• Presentation (LO2, LO4, LO6, LO7) Presentation or video covering your placement experience, to be delivered during final year semester 1.

Formative assessment and feedback

Formal feedback will be provided on your initial submission of a CV and Cover Letter, in order to help you to improve them in preparation for job applications. You will receive on-going feedback as you develop your PDR; this can feed directly into the reflective element of your Placement Report. You will also receive feedback on your Placement Report, Presentation and your final CV and Cover Letter submission. Ad hoc individual tutorial feedback will also be available.

Module aims

• To enable you to acquire and develop knowledge as it occurs in professional practice
• To enable you to apply academic knowledge to work activities and processes in practice
• To enable you to mature through the evaluation of your placement experiences
• To support you in developing and applying new skills appropriate to the professional setting in which you are working; and
• To enable you to develop the employability skills and attitudes/approach that graduate employers look for and that are required of a person working in a professional capacity.

Learning outcomes

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to further your personal and professional development and to enhance your work-related skills, before, during and after your placement. Much of the learning will be independent.

The learning and teaching methods may include:

• briefing sessions;


• industrial seminars;


• online learning resources;


• 1:1 support;


• interviews;


• experiential learning through the placement itself;


• placement visits from your University Visiting Professional Training Tutor;


• mentoring from your workplace supervisor;


• assisted critical self-reflection by way of the PDR; and


• discussions with other students.

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
