Module Overview

This module has been developed in order to facilitate the further development of knowledge, skills and underlying principles of safe and effective anaesthetic practice. It is designed to be inter-professional and is directed at practitioners working in the operating theatre participating in anaesthetic care. It enables them to develop the knowledge of pharmacological principles underlying the use of medicines in anaesthetic practice for a range of patient groups. Module content is selected and designed to meet the knowledge and skills required to practice anaesthetic care across a broad range of surgical specialties.

Prerequisites / Co-requisites

Students must be registered with their respective professional bodies (NMC/HCPC). It is necessary for the student to be working in a clinical area that allows them to meet the learning outcomes. Anaesthetic practitioner part 1 is a pre requisite for this module.

Principles of anaesthetic care practice:

• physiological parameters and advanced airway management;


• extended surgical anaesthesia;


• paediatric anaesthesia;


• obstetric anaesthesia;


• reversal of anaesthesia; evaluating anaesthetic care;

Health, safety and risk:

• complex risk assessment;

Law and ethics:

• complex legal issues and accountability;

Specialist skills and role expectations:

• competency frameworks;


• specialist skills and core competencies;


• critical evaluation;


• complex care planning - opportunities and considerations;

action planning - short, medium and long term objectives.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge skills and practice on the equipment, techniques and drugs used in anaesthesia so as to be able to act as an anaesthetic practitioner in a range of patient group settings.

Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of several components

A practice portfolio and a summative examination

Formative assessment and feedback

Students will have formative assessment will include examination preparation with feedback in written form 

Students will receive formative feedback via:

·         Single or small group tutorials

·         Verbal discussion during contact time

Timely response to email or telephone questions

Module aims

• This module aims to develop safe, competent and confident anaesthetic practitioners who can underpin their practice, in a range of clinical settings caring for clients across the lifespan with appropriate evidence

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:

• Enable students to have a deep and systematic understanding of complex anaesthetic practice


• Anaesthesia and patient safety within an organisational context


• To draw upon their own experience to develop their understanding of the current evidence base for anaesthetic practitioner practice

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
