Module Overview

Being able to plan, document and manage the logistics and operational aspects of an event is an essential quality for all event managers. In order to be successful you must be able to work with a diverse workforce and operate within a range of different contractual obligations. This module covers the aspects of planning and management and operations in events management from venue inspection, negotiations, event production and logistics through to food, beverage and concessions and the logistics of the event. The focus is on understanding the practical considerations of running an event. Students will be required to undertake site visits, work on practical case studies geared towards ultimately running their own event in year two. It may require working alone outside the set sessions and carrying out research, therefore not all sessions will be held with the tutor.

Assessment Strategy

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate a comprehensive and accurate understanding of the fundementals of project and logistics management of events.

 

Assessment 1 - Essay on the principles of event project planning and logistics (1500 words).

Assessment 2 - Case study of site management of a medium to large scale festival  (2000 words)

Formative feedback

Students receive feedback throughout the semester via face to face teaching which will support them to complete the assessments.

Module aims

  • Explore the fundamentals of project structure in relation to small and large scale festivals
  • Be knowledgeable of the logistical requirements for running a variety of live events
  • Understand and apply the principles of project management
  • Develop professional skills in order to negotiate and manage event contracts

Methods of Teaching / Learning

The learning and teaching strategy is designed to encourage students to respond to formal presentations but also take responsibility for their own learning by combining lecture presentations with self-directed learning based around the core text and supporting material on SurreyLearn.

 

The learning and teaching methods include lectures, directed reading and case studies followed by discussions on SurreyLearn. One lecture is scheduled every week for 11 weeks, plus a two hour seminar session. Essential independent learning is included with attendance on the ESP and IPC preparation

Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
