Management of Human Resources is an introductory module and available to students undertaking a range of MSc programmes at the Surrey Business School. It is intended to provide a firm understanding of the theory and practice of Human Resource management and its strategic role in contemporary organisations. This module covers core functions of HRM and their integration within business strategy as well as contemporary topics concerning management of people. By the end of this module, the students will have gained essential knowledge base of processes of HR as a function in organisations as well as integrated understanding of essential issues.

The assessment strategy is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate specialist knowledge and ability to apply theoretical perspectives of HR management to organisational practices through undertaking an assignment and an exam.
Thus, the summative assessment for this module consists of:
- Individual HR strategy report assignment, which contributes 70% towards the module mark. It requires students to research and identify practical implications of key theories and findings and propose knowledge-based plan for managing people in the workplace to suit organisational strategy as well as demonstrate their critical thinking skills and ability to articulate complex ideas in writing.
- The end of term 1.5 hour exam, contributing 30% of the overall module mark. The exam at the end of the semester will require students to respond to short answer questions aimed to test students’ knowledge and understanding of the module concepts.
Formative assessment and feedback
Students will be given formative feedback in lectures through a variety of interactive activities. These will involve discussions with students and review of lecture content to check their level of understanding and provide feedback. Also, students will be expected to see the module convener on 1:1 basis and receive formative feedback on their individual assignment progress. Additionally, exam preparation session will be delivered at the final lecture of the semester, aimed at recapitulating the module content and helping students to prepare for the exam.

Methods of Teaching / Learning
The learning and teaching strategy is designed to:
Expose students to a range of delivery methods which will include both formal classroom teaching and self-directed study to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the learning outcomes and assessment criteria.
The learning and teaching methods include:
Three-hour weekly sessions will provide lectures with integrated interactive problem-based learning exercises and discussions, which will link theory and practice. Lecture PowerPoint presentations and additional resources will be made available in SurreyLearn.
Indicated Lecture Hours (which may also include seminars, tutorials, workshops and other contact time) are approximate and may include in-class tests where one or more of these are an assessment on the module. In-class tests are scheduled/organised separately to taught content and will be published on to student personal timetables, where they apply to taken modules, as soon as they are finalised by central administration. This will usually be after the initial publication of the teaching timetable for the relevant semester.
